About the role

ROLE SUMMARY

The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of Internal Medicine (IM) is based in Cambridge, MA, and reports to the Chief Internal Medicine Officer.   The IM CSO will lead all drug discovery up to IND enabling studies  to support first-in-human (FIH) dosing  for Pfizer’s Internal Medicine research programs.  The IM CSO will develop and drive the strategy of the research unit to identify the best therapeutic targets and advance the most promising candidates that will build and deliver the unit’s pipeline of new obesity and cardiometabolic medicines. The IM CSO is part of a team of leaders – working in close partnership with the Chief Internal Medicine Officer, the IM Chief Development Officer and the IM Commercial Lead.  This leadership team is responsible for developing and implementing the end-to-end strategy for Pfizer’s internal medicine portfolio from discovery through commercialization.

 

The IM CSO has direct line management responsibility for  a team of approximately 100 colleagues with an operational budget of approximately $45M .

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide exceptional leadership for the development and execution of IM’s scientific research.
  • Deliver the IM portfolio to advance high quality, first in class candidates to first in human studies (FIH) to support the delivery of medicines that are medically differentiated and commercially viable.
  • Partner with IM Chief Development Officer and IM Commercial Lead to develop and implement Pfizer’s Internal Medicine strategy.
  • Drive innovation and breaking science that will advance the best molecules and hypotheses ahead of the competition.
  • Provide clear vision and scientific expertise while delegating hands-on execution against objectives within the organization. 
  • Lead IM research with significant capabilities in a highly matrixed environment.
  • Connect emerging science, unmet medical need, and commercial viability to identify opportunities for drug development internally and externally.
  • Advance all programs by the best means to test them quickly and convincingly in humans making scientifically sound decisions at each key milestone.
  • Build scientific capability and expertise for current projects and for strategic areas of investment in the internal medicine area. Support the career development of colleagues at levels within the IM research unit.
  • Partner continuously through robust dialogue with the commercial business to align end-to-end internal medicine therapeutic activities in-line with the overall strategic plan.
  • Build and sustain a strong focus on value-based returns making tradeoffs between investment decisions and budgets in the delivery of differentiated medicines. ,
  • Nurture an IM end-to-end culture which, (1) engages Pfizer colleagues both within the IM research teams and beyond to enthusiastically and optimistically strive for the discovery of new medicines addressing unmet medical needs; (2) actively seeks, embraces, and successfully applies the best biomedical research to discovering new drugs; and (3) doggedly aims to win the race with competitors to deliver the first and/or best-in-class therapies.

 

STRATEGY

  • Develop and drive implementation of the IM research strategy/business plan and ensure close collaboration and alignment with Development, Regulatory, and Commercial leadership for the end-to-end Internal Medicine strategic plan.
  • Provide exemplary scientific and strategic leadership in developing and growing drug discovery capabilities.
  • Provide thought leadership, mentorship, operational excellence, and influence to create an environment of collaborative research that drives successful programs to meet the scientific and business objectives of the company.
  • Set priorities within IM research as the single point of accountability for the delivery of discovery research and clinical candidates for the Internal Medicine area.
  • Set objectives for the creation of value by the IMRU that realizes the end-to-end therapeutic area strategy and provides an appropriate return on investment.
  • Influence the global external environment through thought leadership and visible, active engagement with key opinion leaders, regulatory authorities, payers, patient advocacy groups, and other key stakeholders.
