40Position Summary
Work schedule and shifts: 10 hour days - No holiday or Weekend requirements.Clinic overview: This is an inpatient role only. No ambulatory expectations. This position is located within the Barnes Hospital managing cardiac consult services.
Day-in-the-life snapshot:
- See inpatient cardiac surgery consults in a timely fashion (same day as consult placed).
- Review and staff all patients with appropriate cardiac surgeon.
- Document full billable consult notes.
- See all inpatient cardiac surgery follow-up patients daily (patients who have not yet had a decision made on surgery or are waiting on surgery).
- Document daily progress notes as appropriate.
- Help plan for surgery-date/bookcase, order and ensure all pre-op testing that is needed is complete prior to surgical date.
- Order TEE, LHC, other needed pre-op testing and follow up results.
- Keep cardiac surgery consult list up to date.
- email sign-out list to attendings and fellows daily.
- Coordinate care between patient, primary teams, consulting teams.
- Answer all incoming calls/pages/emails/EPIC chat messages/questions from all services.
- Patient and family teaching and education re: surgery, what to expect before, during and after surgery.
- Helping to ensure surgical consents are completed.
- Communicate any updates in patient status and testing with surgeons and escalate care as needed
- Order intra-op antibiotics for all same day surgery admission patients (usually done one day to one week prior).
- Participate in weekly multidisciplinary valve and aortic meeting.
- Participate in weekly Cardiac Surgery Grand Rounds.
- Participate in monthly Cardiac Quality Steering Committee meeting.
- Help with Quality Initiative projects as directed by the Steering Committee.
- Coordinate any needed follow-up care for patients discharged home and waiting on surgery.
Provides primary and/or specialty nursing and/or medical care in a variety of settings; works under physician oversight as required by state regulation and functions within the scope of practice defined by the Nurse Practitioner’s specialty certification, Barnes-Jewish Hospital medical by-laws, and, where it exists, the collaborative practice agreement.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Provides direct patient care to include obtaining patient history, performing patient assessment via observation, interview and examination; orders, performs and interprets diagnostic studies; performs preventative health assessments, screenings, immunizations and care; provides direct treatment and management of acute and chronic disease conditions; develops and implements patient-centered plan of care in collaboration with physicians, patients, consultants, nurses, ancillary care providers and others as appropriate to the patient's condition.
Manages health conditions via prescriptive authority or referral to other healthcare providers or community resources; may perform diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification and state regulations.
May bill for services covered by collaborative practice agreement.
Provides counseling and education of patients and their families/caregivers concerning preventative health, treatment options and community resources.
Monitors/ensures accuracy of patient medical records; maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc.
Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with established clinic/hospital standards.
Provides management services for clinical research study projects; monitors participating subjects, including medication administration and family/patient education.
Works in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Regularly participates in constant quality improvement and process improvement activities centered on the goal of providing exceptional, evidence-based patient care.
Enhances professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
