Job Summary:

Provides technical leadership while working alongside skilled pathologists, handing complex gross examinations, maintaining the autopsy service, and ensuring accurate specimen processing. Manages and monitors the quality and compliance standards associated with the surgical pathology dissection laboratory, compiling department data and disseminating results appropriately.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Schedules, delegates, and leads staff pathologist assistants to ensure coverage of multiple service lines. 
  • Collects and maintains data for the department and reports on quality performance for anatomic pathology as required. 
  • Assists leadership with planning and projects of medium to high complexity and size. 
  • Collaborates with manager on policy and quality improvement and implementation. 
  • Maintains accreditation standard requirements in all areas of anatomic and surgical pathology. 
  • Provides training for new surgical pathology staff to include pathologist assistants, residents, grossing technologists, and lab technicians.   
  • Coordinates the surgical pathology lab educational experiences for medical students, pathologist assistant students, and others.  
  • Coordinates technical resolution for IHT problems, specimen errors, and resolves accessioning and order errors. 
  • Performs gross examination and dictation of surgical and autopsy specimens. 
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

EDUCATION

  • Master's Degree

EXPERIENCE

  • Three years' experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Rare climbing.
