Summary
SUMMARY
We are seeking a licensed General Dentist to support the Maryland Army National Guard by performing non-treatment dental examinations for service members. This position is part of a federal contract focused on medical readiness and involves completing routine dental screenings and documenting results in the DENCLASS system. The role is based at two clinical locations—Camp Fretterd in Reisterstown, MD, and the Flight Surgeon’s Clinic in Edgewood, MD. No dental procedures are performed only assessments to classify dental readiness according to DoD standards. The ideal candidate is a licensed dentist in Maryland, comfortable working independently in a clinical setting, and able to meet federal documentation and access requirements. Experience with military readiness exams or federal systems like DENCLASS is required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performing comprehensive dental examinations, assessing current oral health, and determining the risk of future oral disease in accordance with Army standards.
- Documenting Soldier’s annual dental examinations.
- Reviewing and uploading findings into DENCLASS.
- Documenting all dental concerns and findings reported by Soldiers and discovered during examinations.
- Reporting significant or concerning findings to the Deputy State Surgeon or their designee.
- Coordinating dental treatment plans with appropriate medical or dental facilities.
- Educating Soldiers on resources available to improve oral health and dental readiness.
- Attending mass medical readiness events as required by the state and individual units.
- Complying with all military, legal (HIPAA and Privacy Act), and regulatory policies and procedures concerning duties and responsibilities of a licensed dentist.
- Monitor and respond to emails and voicemails during business hours; use out-of-office messages when unavailable or off schedule.
- Comply with OSHA guidelines regarding the use of disposable examination instruments and medical waste.
- Implementing standard universal precautions and infection control measures.
- Comply with COMSEC procedures and government regulations regarding authorized use of the Government's computer network.
- Complete initial and/or annual Information Assurance (IA) training.
- Marking and safeguarding files, output products, and storage media according to classification levels and disseminating them only to authorized individuals with a valid need to know.
- Completing all training required to obtain and maintain access to military databases, websites, and network access.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Hold a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Have a minimum of three years of experience as a dentist with the military population.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Must be a licensed dentist in the state of Maryland.
- A minimum of (3) years of experience as a dentist with the military population is required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
- No supervision is required for this position. Although, you may need to instruct staff on procedures required for support.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Services will be performed at two primary locations in Maryland:
- Camp Fretterd Military Reservation (CFMR), 5555 Rue Saint Lo Drive, BLDG 205, Reisterstown, Maryland, 21136.
- The Flight Surgeon’s Clinic, 2624 Fairview Point Road, Building E-6814, Edgewood, Maryland, 21040.
- Typically, three days will be at CFMR and one day at Edgewood. Alternate work locations, workdays, and hours may be authorized.
- The Government will furnish the necessary workspace, including a dental suite, basic office supplies, necessary dental tools, and utilities.
- Teleworking is NOT authorized.
- Contractor personnel and vehicles are subject to installation regulations, security checks, and potential delays due to unscheduled gate closures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while conducting exams (clinic hours are 0800–1630, four days per week).
- Fine motor skills to perform oral examinations using dental instruments (e.g., mirrors, probes).
- Good vision (with correction if needed) to accurately inspect and assess oral health.
- Hearing ability to communicate clearly with patients and staff, especially in military or clinical environments.
- Manual dexterity to handle instruments safely and effectively during screening procedures.
