Position Summary:

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of large sized construction equipment, heavy trucks, or comparable automotive equipment.  Work may include routine servicing and light maintenance of assigned equipment.  Work may extend to operation of equipment of a higher grade in accordance with established procedures.  Work is performed in accordance with orders and instructions and accepted trade practices, with the employee expected to vary operating techniques in response to conditions.  Employees in this classification are expected to exercise independent judgment on the job, especially in the absence of a Foreman.  Employees may serve as lead workers in directing lower level employees on projects.  General supervision is received from a supervisor whose review of work may vary from constant observation to occasional spot checks, depending upon the proficiency of the individual operator.  Work assignments are received directly from a supervisor.

Examples of Work Performed:

The following duties are typical of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

  • Employees in this class may operate the following equipment or have the following assignments: Bulldozer, motor grader, large end loader, asphalt paver.

  • Serves as lead worker; directs work of lower level employees for assigned projects.

  • Ensures best management practices are use in the field in construction or road maintenance such as ditching or roadway construction.

  • Properly grade roadway to grade with motor grader.

Qualifications:

High school graduation or equivalent preferred. At least one (1) year of relevant paid work experience.

Necessary Special Qualification

Possession of a valid Wisconsin Class A CDL without air brake restrictions OR pass the required Class A CDL written exams and obtain a Class A CDL without restrictions on air brakes and tanker endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, and hazards involved in the operation of assigned equipment.

  • Some knowledge of, or the ability to learn quickly, the geography of the assigned work area.

  • Ability to work effectively without close supervision.

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

  • Considerable skill in the operation of assigned equipment.

  • Knowledge of proper safety precautions required when using power equipment

  • Skill in operating assigned winter road maintenance equipment.

  • Knowledge of Force Computerized Equipment on snow equipment.

  • Knowledge in brine making operations.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of highway construction and maintenance.

  • Ability to operate trucks and equipment effectively, safely, and efficiently.

  • Ability to accurately calculate and record material quantities and perform legible documentation of various work activities.

  • Some positions require knowledge in reading blueprints and the ability to use this information to complete required construction and maintenance tasks.

  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.

  • Ability to perform routine operations without close supervision.

  • Ability to perform moderately heavy manual work.

  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to recognize equipment in need of maintenance. Ability to understand grade stakes.

  • Ability to use level and properly set grades.

  • Considerable knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, and hazards involved in the operation of assigned equipment.

Compensation:

Starting hourly rate: $27.61 + Marathon County benefits.
