We are looking for a Communications Specialist II!

About the Position:

Are you passionate about using social media to build community, inspire engagement, and strengthen trust between residents and their city? Salt Lake City is looking for a dynamic, strategic, and collaborative professional to lead our social media presence and guide the City’s digital voice.

In this role, you’ll manage SLCgov’s social media platforms, curating content that connects with our diverse community and showcases the work of City departments. You’ll also lead an internal network of social media professionals, helping shape standards and share best practices across teams.

As the City’s social media governance lead, you’ll develop and implement citywide goals, policies, and strategies—including content planning, risk evaluation and crisis response, education and training, and security compliance. You’ll oversee all City-run accounts to ensure a consistent, branded, and engaging approach, while maintaining a citywide content calendar to support coordinated messaging and outreach.

We’re looking for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, has strong strategic instincts, and understands the nuances of managing a large-scale social media program in the public sector. Experience in social media governance is strongly preferred.

Position Salary Range:

E29 - $70,533/yr. to $96,289/yr.  

The established market rate for this position is $96,289/yr.

This position is eligible for full city benefits, including:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Creates high-quality communications content to increase outreach and engagement efforts through both independent and collaborative work across the Salt Lake City enterprise.

  • May develop and manage communications, engagement, design, and social media resources for use by City departments, divisions, and work groups, including: interactive trainings, best practices, policies, language and accessibility guides, databases, and workflow processes.

  • Manages and maintains official social media accounts and profiles and works with teams citywide to identify communication content, topics, and flow of information. Designs and implements social media and communications marketing plan and editorial calendar.

  • Consults on communication strategies of various scopes and levels of complexity, employing a neutral, over-arching perspective that leverages cross-departmental coordination.

  • Tracks metrics on content, views, and overall audience and community engagement. Utilizes analytics reports to gain insight into traffic, demographics, and effectiveness and employs this information to positively affect future outcomes.

  • Covers, reports, and promotes City services, initiatives, events, press conferences, and public meetings through social media, digital programming, media relations, and written communications.

  • Stays current with engagement, social media, multimedia, and web communication trends and technologies.

  • Performs post-production editing of photo and video segments from a variety of sources and in a variety of formats using industry standard too
