Position

TIL is seeking an experienced Lead Aviation Systems Engineer. As a member of our Engineering and Development team, your primary responsibilities will be performing avionics data specification research on operational technologies (OT) to support new platform builds and assessments. You will assess critical operational technology systems, reverse engineer their software and hardware, identify vulnerabilities, build custom capabilities, and field new avionics solutions and platforms. You will play a crucial role in helping TIL build next-generation multi-domain mission systems. 

Responsibilities

This position requires you to understand, reverse engineer, and interface with binary aviation data systems. You will develop software to interpret data from these systems and write data to these systems. You may use reverse engineering and software disassembly tools (such as Ghidra, IdaPro, etc.) to perform these tasks. You should also have a strong understanding of C/C++ and other common embedded device programming languages, as well as embedded Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS) so that you fully understand the firmware/software functions of the device being researched. You should be able to use documentation, raw data, and common reverse engineering techniques to produce a description of the message required to interface with native aircraft avionic systems. 

In this role you will be expected to: 

  • Reverse engineer firmware/software binaries/hardware using the tools of your choice. 
  • Support, monitor, and assess systems design, development, integration, and verification activities.
  • Assist to continually monitor and assess aircraft modernization efforts, keeping abreast of system schedules, performance progress, and resolution of technical problems.
  • Investigate and recommend appropriate action concerning the need to redirect engineering efforts, pursue additional lines of development, and determine compromises on previously established requirements if required.
  • Support the development of avionics technical tasks to be completed for inclusion in the overall program schedule.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to software engineers.
  • Support feasibility studies and technical evaluations to ensure that systems, subsystems and equipment being developed are mutually compatible and serve to meet overall operational and technical requirements.
  • Write code in C/C++ and/or Python to demonstrate your findings and build general OT red teaming tools. 
  • Write scripts to translate data between formats and perform validation checks.
  • Write scripts to check data validity and fix common data formatting errors.
  • Write reports to record your findings and convey them to the Development and Data teams. 
  • Integrate solutions with software developed by app development team.
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, technical findings and concepts to internal stakeholders and customers. 
  • Ability to travel up to 20%
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Active US Government secret clearance. 
  • Must have experience with Avionics Weapons and Electronics (AWE) systems
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent. 
  • Experience in reverse engineering software/firmware or hardware of complex embedded systems. 
  • Must have experience working with DoD avionics data systems.
  • Experience with multiple programming languages like C/C++, Python, Java, Go, Rust, etc.
