A Day in the Life

The Medical Device Technical Writer plays a vital role in the development and communication of clear, accurate, and compliant documentation for medical devices. This position involves creating user manuals, technical guides, regulatory documents, and safety instructions that ensure both healthcare professionals and patients can effectively and safely use the products. A key part of the role is working closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers, regulatory experts, and product managers, to translate complex technical information into accessible, user-friendly content that meets industry standards and regulatory requirements. The Medical Device Technical Writer is essential to ensuring product safety, compliance, and usability throughout the device’s lifecycle.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

• Creates, develops, plans, writes and edits operational, instructional, maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia, web-based publications and user sites; may produce content for embedded user assistance technology.
• Conducts interviews with various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation.
• Researches and translates technical information into manuals and/or web-based documents for nontechnical and technical users.
• May document engineering processes and specifications.
• Recommends formats responsive to technical and customer requirements.
• Produces products that conform to the company documentation and quality assurance standards.

Required Knowledge and Experience: 

• Bachelor's degree with 2 years of experience in technical writing

OR

• An advanced degree with 0 years of experience in technical writing

Nice to Have:

• Previous technical writing experience with Medtronic
• Experience with medical device documentation and familiarity with regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485, IEC 62366)
• Proficiency in using documentation tools such as Adobe FrameMaker, MadCap Flare, or Microsoft Word
• Understanding of design controls and product development processes in the medical device industry
• Ability to interpret technical specifications and collaborate with engineering and clinical teams
• Strong understanding of user-centered design principles to create intuitive and effective documentation
• Familiarity with localization processes for global markets
• Experience with quality management systems (QMS) and document control procedures
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to review and proofread complex documents for clarity and accuracy
• Strong project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
