Department Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative leader to join the Center for Nursing Excellence & Innovation (CNEI) at OHSU in a newly created role that will shape the future of Nursing Professional Development (NPD) across our system.

 

This is a unique opportunity to build and expand the infrastructure for professional development at OHSU Health, including Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Ambulatory Nursing. The ideal candidate will bring a creative and strategic mindset to guide a team of Practice Leaders and drive the implementation of NPD principles system-wide.

Function/Duties of Position

Strategic Leadership in Nursing Professional Development

  • Lead the system-wide strategy and infrastructure for Nursing Professional Development (NPD), aligned with the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) Scope and Standards of Practice.
  • Advance evidence-based practices that support onboarding, competency management, continuing education, and role transition.

Oversight of Practice Leader Team

  • Direct, coach, and develop a team of Practice Leaders across OHSU Health, including acute care, pediatrics (Doernbecher Children’s), perinatal, and ambulatory settings.
  • Support Practice Leaders in implementing NPD standards to meet the evolving needs of clinical practice.

Program Design and Implementation

  • Design and implement professional development programs including:
    • Onboarding & Orientation
    • Competency Management
    • Continuing Education
    • Practice Change Education
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of learning activities using outcomes-based assessment methods.

Systems Thinking and Collaboration

  • Partner with nursing, operational, academic, and informatics stakeholders to ensure alignment between educational strategies and system goals.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary and interprofessional learning initiatives that foster team-based care and clinical excellence.

Governance and Regulatory Alignment

  • Align professional development programs with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards.
  • Represent NPD in professional governance structures and ensure nursing education initiatives reflect shared governance input.

Advocacy and Resource Management

  • Advocate for resources, technologies, and structures that support NPD roles and infrastructure.
  • Develop and manage budgets that align with the strategic goals of the Center for Nursing Excellence & Innovation (CNEI).

Scholarship, Innovation, and Professional Growth

  • Promote a culture of lifelong learning, reflective practice, and scholarly inquiry.
  • Lead and disseminate projects that contribute to the science and practice of NPD.

Required Qualifications

  • BSN or higher degree in nursing AND Master’s degree in nursing or related field (e.g. MBA with Healthcare Administration concentration, Public Health) OR  Enrolled in nursing or related graduate program and completion within 2 years. 
  • Five years of experience as a registered nurse in a related clinical area of practice AND two years recent formal or informal management/leadership experience.
  • Experience in complex organization environments.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple conflicting priorities.
  • Proficient with word processing, computational spreadsheet (e.g., Excel), and presentation software.
  • Unencumered Oregon RN License.
  • BLS for healthcare provider by the American Heart Association.
  • Professional certification in nursing leadership-or nursing professional development within 3 years of assuming the manager role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in nursing leadership
  • Three-years of recent formal leadership experience in the related clinical area of practice
  • NPDBC Certification
  • Experience with nurse residency programs, PTAP accreditation, onboarding and orientation, competency management and systems level professional development initiatives

Additional Details

  • Comprehensive health care plans. Covered 100% for full-time employees and 88% for dependents for .9 FTE and higher.
