Maine's only State run facility housing youth offenders is looking for someone who is career minded, goal oriented and dedicated to the reintegration of sentenced youth back into the community.  This is a position that requires an ability to multitask across several different disciplines.  We are only looking for those with the drive and desire to take on these tasks day in and day out, keeping security in mind at all times, and dedicated to Maine's youth.  Experience working with juveniles in a correctional setting is a must.  The position is open to Maine Department of Corrections employees and all outside candidates.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Long Creek Youth Development Center is the Department of Corrections’ only youth facility, housing residents of all classifications.  The Deputy Superintendent of Operations at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine, is direct care work involving the supervision, security, treatment, and rehabilitation of juveniles committed and/or held at the facility. The detained and committed juvenile residents of Long Creek are up to 21 years old, often with a history of trauma and concurrent mental health and substance use disorders, chronic behavioral issues, and/or aggression. We recruit moral, ethical, and dependable candidates as JPWs to be a role model, life coach, and a positive, supportive adult that can be missing in their lives.  Additionally responsibilities include assisting the Superintendent with directing and overseeing the operations/security of the facility.  You will support the administrative functions of the facility with differing levels of scope, accountability, and complexity.             

REQUIREMENTS

To be successful in this position you must have knowledge and abilities in areas such as:

• Knowledge of rules and regulations governing the conduct of correctional facility residents.
• Knowledge of modem penological principles and practices as well as criminal procedures and penal institutions
• Knowledge of individual and group habits and attitudes and general behavior of residents under restraint.
• Knowledge of Unit Management principles and practices.
• Knowledge of and ability to interpret facility regulations.
• Knowledge of correctional supervisory principles and practices in dealing with subordinate employees.
• Ability to supervise and manage a large staff
• Ability to enforce regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
• Ability to interpret institution rules and regulations.
• Ability to analyze, interpret, and present the result of research in oral, written and/or graphic form.
• Ability to administer a large complex activity.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to develop policies and procedures and monitor goals and objectives.
• Ability to analyze issues, reach logical conclusions, and make sound recommendations and decisions.
• Knowledge of legislative process.
• Knowledge of personnel management.
• Knowledge of labor relations and contract negotiations.
• Knowledge-of Correctional High Security Equipment and technology.
• Knowledge and skills necessary to manage, plan, organize.
• Ability to effectively coordinate and communicate between state, local and federal governments.
• Ability to interpret and coordinate/implement DOC policy as they relate to ACA and PREA standards.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Social Science, Business or Public Administration, or related field, and eight (8) years of progressively responsible management experience in correctional programs and facility operations including experience in a supervisory and/or advanced administrative capacity.  Related experience may be substituted for education requirements on a year-for-year basis. 

Preference will be given to applicants with experience dealing with juveniles in a correctional setting.
