Job Title

Government Technical Director

What does a successful Government Technical Director do?

As the Government Technical Director, you serve as the senior technical lead and single point of accountability for the performance, reliability, and continuous improvement of a large-scale, mission-critical government technology services program. You partner closely with executive client stakeholders and cross-functional teams in architecture, security, product, and operations to govern service quality, resolve complex incidents, and advance a pragmatic technical roadmap that enables measurable outcomes. This role requires a senior, client‑facing technical leader who fluently engages engineers on design and delivery details, translates implications into clear, executive‑level recommendations, negotiates scope and commercial outcomes confidently, and de‑escalates and resolves difficult client situations with composure and authority.

What you'll do:

  • Own end-to-end technical service delivery and platform performance for a mission-critical government program, ensuring reliability, scalability, and continuity.
  • Govern service level agreements (service level agreements (SLAs)), compliance obligations, and operational excellence with clear metrics, dashboards, and executive-ready reporting.
  • Define and maintain the technical roadmap, modernization priorities, and long-term platform health across internal technology and product groups and third parties.
  • Lead cross-functional incident response; coordinate root cause analysis and corrective actions; communicate impact, timelines, and mitigations to executive stakeholders.
  • Translate complex technical issues into clear, options-based recommendations; align scope and outcomes with client objectives in partnership with Account Management and Product.
  • Drive risk identification and mitigation across integrations, APIs, networking, security controls, and change/release activities; validate readiness before production changes.
  • Facilitate requirements clarification, architecture trade-off decisions, and solution alignment across internal and external stakeholders to remove blockers and accelerate delivery.

Experience you'll need to have:

  • 8+ years of experience leading complex IT delivery and operations for enterprise-scale platforms in regulated environments, with accountability for reliability and performance.
  • 5+ years of direct, executive-facing experience translating business and operational needs into technical delivery plans for large programs.
  • 5+ years of experience directing major incident and problem management for 24x7 systems, including root cause analysis and preventive action tracking.
  • Proficiency across multi-platform environments, including APIs, integrations, networking, information security controls, and observability tooling (logging and monitoring), with the ability to synthesize technical issues into executive-ready recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to define and govern service level agreements (SLAs), key performance indicators (KPIs), and compliance reporting to drive continuous improvement.
  • ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) Foundation certification or equivalent practical experience with service management frameworks.
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, work, and/or military experience.

Experience that would be great to have:

  • Background supporting government technology programs or mission-critical payment/transaction systems (e.g., PCI, card brand requirements, gateways).
  • Working knowledge of cybersecurity and compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST, FedRAMP) and secure operations in cloud environments such as AWS or Azure.
  • Familiarity with modern architecture patterns (microservices, event-driven), site reliability engineering (SRE) practices, and resilience/chaos testing.

How you'll work:

  • This is a remote-based role that requires frequent interaction with senior client stakeholders and may involve periodic on‑site engagements.
