Xumo, a joint venture between Comcast and Charter Communications, was formed to develop and offer a next-generation streaming platform for the entire entertainment industry. The company consists of three primary lines of business: Xumo devices, Xumo Play, and Xumo Enterprise. Powered by Comcast’s global entertainment platform, Xumo devices feature a world-class user interface with universal voice search capabilities, making it easy for consumers to find and enjoy their favorite streaming content. Xumo Play is a free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) service offering hundreds of linear channels and on-demand options. Xumo Enterprise provides tools and services for content creators, distributors, and advertisers to make FAST content more accessible.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Director of Software Engineering to lead the development and evolution of our cutting-edge Video Content Management System (CMS). This role demands a strong technical leader with a proven track record in building and scaling robust backend systems, leveraging cloud-based architectures, and driving innovation in video streaming technologies. The Director will lead a team of talented engineers, collaborate closely with product and operations teams, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, scalable solutions that meet our business objectives.

Job Description

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Technical Vision:
- Define and execute the technical strategy and roadmap for the CMS platform, aligning with business goals and market trends.
- Drive innovation in backend/frontend architectures, cloud technologies, and video streaming solutions.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and communicate their potential impact to decision-makers.

Engineering Team Leadership and Management:
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of backend/frontend engineers, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Establish and maintain best practices for software development, testing, and deployment.
- Manage resource allocation, project timelines, and budgets, ensuring efficient delivery of CMS initiatives.
- Recruit top engineering talent.

CMS Platform Development and Architecture:
- Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of scalable backend systems using Java, Spring Boot, and other modern technologies.
- Ensure the development of robust RESTful APIs for frontend applications and third-party integrations.
- Drive the design and implementation of efficient database solutions (relational and NoSQL) for video metadata, user data, and system logs.

Ensure the security, maintenance, and scalability of the CMS platform.
- Cloud Infrastructure and Operations:
- Lead the deployment and management of cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP) using containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes).
- Manage and integrate message brokers (RabbitMQ) for seamless microservices communication.
- Analyze system performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimization strategies.

Quality and Security:
- Ensure rigorous testing and debugging practices to maintain high software quality.
- Prioritize and enforce security best practices to protect sensitive data.
- Oversee unit test development and maintenance.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with product managers, frontend engineers, and operations teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
- Work with graphic designers to implement new features.

Position is office based in Irvine, CA- 4 days/week & 1 day/week remote.
