Certified Medical Assistant- Duke Urgent CareOcc Summary

The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral membe r of theinterdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient ca re. TheMedical Assistant, Certified performs routine administrative and patientcare supportive duties in a Health System medical practice that a ssistmedical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment ofpat ients and ensure the clinic/office runs smoothly.


Work Perf ormed

Clinical responsibilities:The CMA takes medical histories and records vital signs, explainstreatment procedures to patients, and p repares patients for examinationsand procedures.Patient care support res ponsibilities may include assistingthe medicaland nursing staff during examination and procedures, collecting andpreparing laboratory specimens , performing basic laboratory test in theclinic/office, taking electroca rdiograms, removing sutures/ staples,changing sterile and non-sterile dressings, promoting patient/familyunderstanding of the educational conten t and his/her involvement in theplan of care, and documenting in the pat ient record.Other clinical support responsibilities include disposing of contaminated supplies, instrument processing, high level disinfectionand sterilization of medical instruments, telephoning prescriptions to apha rmacy, preparing and administering medications as directed by aphysician , and authorizing drug refills as directed. Performs otherclinical functions as delegated and supervised by the physician.Administrative respons ibilities:The CMA greets patients, answers telephones, schedules appoint ments toinclude arrive appointments in MaestroCare, checkout patients, a ndreferral scheduling; arranges forhospital admissions and laboratoryse rvices, updates and files patient medical records, fills out insurancefo rms, handles billing, bookkeeping to include receiving copays andcollect ions on account balances; correspondence, and ordering clinicaland cleri cal supplies and forms. Performs other administrative duties asdirected. May be requested to be a liaison for clinic activities such as JointComm ission and falls and/or participate in clinic committees.


K nowledge, Skills and Abilities

Good customer service skills.Work requires the ability to understand and follow oral and writteninstructi ons generally acquired through a high school education andmedical assist ant programming.Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchairpatients may be required.Working knowledge of sterile techniq ues and special procedures that areapplicable to work performed.Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administeringroutine and special treatments to patients.Working knowledge of sanitation, pers onal hygiene and basic health andsafety precautions applicable for work in a clinic setting. Workingknowledge of infection control procedures an d safety precautions.Age specific competencies.Daily clinic preparation process; registration, scheduling, chargeposting, order entry. Able to d ocument and communicate pertinentinformationAbility to establish and mai ntain effective working relationships withpatients and clinic staffTypin g skillsMedical terminologyLevels II and III -- Ability to independently seek out resources andwork collaboratively

Minimum Qualifications


Education

Level I -- Graduation from accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required. Level II -- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferr
