The Immunology and Cardiovascular (ICV) Thematic Research Center (TRC) at BMS is one of the fundamental Research and Early Development (R&ED) units delivering therapeutics to patients. Our mission is to create transformative medicines of tomorrow based on the cutting-edge science of today. We leverage BMS’s internal innovation engine that includes industry-leading expertise in small molecule chemistry, protein biotherapeutics, cell therapy, protein degradation, nucleic acids, and other therapeutic modalities. We work closely with our R&ED colleagues in clinical and non-clinical development, project leadership, translational medicine, and informatics to advance therapies based on a deep understanding of causal human biology. Furthermore, we collaborate across the biopharmaceutical ecosystem to establish partnerships that complement our internal expertise.

Position Summary

BMS Discovery Immunology is seeking a skilled and motivated Associate Scientist to join our team located at Cambridge Crossing in Cambridge, MA. The position will utilize the candidate’s expertise in immunology, cellular biology, and molecular biology to validate novel targets in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, as well as support lead identification and optimization of small molecules or biologics against immunological targets. The position is a hands-on, laboratory-based role. Broad expertise in cellular biology is required, with preference given to candidates with demonstrated experience working with primary human immune cell systems. Ideal candidates will be developing early career scientists that demonstrate sophisticated scientific thinking, are driven by curiosity to continually expand their scientific knowledge and technical expertise, and have the capacity/eagerness to rise to new challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, troubleshoot, and execute cellular and immunological assays with primary human immune cells or cell lines.

  • Perform techniques including sterile cell culture, in vitro cell stimulation/co-culture, multiplex ELISA, western blot, RNA isolation, and RT-qPCR. Phenotype cells and cellular responses using multicolor flow cytometry.

  • Design well-controlled experiments, perform data analysis, and summarize findings to the team. When needed, identify technical problems then work to establish solutions. 

  • With guidance from scientific manager, work to independently deliver high-quality, consistent data in a timely manner.

  • Collaborate alongside a cross-functional team with experts in immunology, biotherapeutics, chemistry, in vivo pharmacology, informatics, and translational medicine to discover new therapeutic targets, derive new biological mechanistic insights, and support programs as they move through pre-clinical development. 

  • Travel will be less than 5% of the time. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

    • 2+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in a field of biology, immunology, or related scientific discipline with 2-4 years work experience in academic/industry research setting or a master’s degree in a field or biology, immunology, or related scientific discipline with 0-3 years work experience in academic/industry research setting.
