GENERAL FUNCTION
Under the direction and supervision of the Program Director, the Specialty Program Instructor I will be primarily responsible for providing quality leadership and supervision, in classes, while maintaining a safe, non-competitive environment for YMCA members.
KNOW HOW
- A high school diploma, or its equivalent, and 3-4 years experience leading classes and working with adapted programs/special populations is required. College degree preferred.
- A minimum of 18 years of age.
- Knowledge of program being instructed and basic biomechanics and class leadership experience required.
- Ability to successfully demonstrate motions and skills related to instruction and to verbally provide clear, concise directions.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personal information on children, family and YMCA staff.
- Maintain current certifications in CPR AED, First Aid, Safety & Risk Management, Child Abuse Prevention, New Employee Orientation, YMCA Principles of Health & Fitness and Group Exercise Instructor or the ability to obtain within 60-90 days of employment.
- Administrative skills including the ability to maintain required program and department documentation and records.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise participants during class in order to ensure safety.
- Introduce yourself and make efforts to recognize members on subsequent visits.
- Develop and maintain relationships that promote the building of small communities.
- Create a motivating environment that is friendly and non-competitive.
- Assist in monitoring and improving the cleanliness of the facility.
- Be available to class participants both before and after classes to answer questions and follow-up on any questions you cannot answer during class time.
- Arrive for shift on time and dressed appropriately following the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis dress code.
- Maintain current certifications/trainings.
- Provide safe programs and environment for all participants, volunteers and staff.
- Conducts self in accordance with the YMCA Mission
- Actively participate in the Invest-In-Youth annual campaign.
- Attend all staff meetings and training associated with the YMCA Program.
- Assist with other projects or activities as needed.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand and perform repetitive movements for extended periods of time
- Ability to bend at the waist and knees.
- Ability to lift 40 pounds and transport equipment
- Ability to visually inspect equipment and complete preventative maintenance checklist as required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with participants, staff and volunteers
- Ability to demonstrate and lead activities
- Ability to solve problems/address participant concerns and use sound judgment even when distracted by noise and activity.
- Ability to observe and promote safety and security procedures.
- Ability to physically and mentally respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
MEMBER INVOLVEMENT SKILLS
- Be informed and up to date on the latest developments in your field.
- Acquaint members with other YMCA programs and benefits.
- Develop relationships that promote the building of small communities.
- Recommend participation in a variety of YMCA programs.
- Support our YMCA annual campaign by inviting members to participate.
- Be able to articulate the role and importance of volunteers.
