Ancestry seeks an exceptional, passionate, and highly motivated Data Scientist to join our (Handwriting Recognition) HWR team. The HWR team is responsible for processing and extracting records from historical records including text, data, audio and image sources to help customers discover and connect with their family history. We have heavily invested in this area and as a scientist on the HWR team, you will help us with building state of the art vision and NLP pipelines that can be used for processing billions of content images. 

What you will do...

  • As a Deep Learning Scientist on the HWR team, you will build, train and fine-tune models that can help with extracting records from images with handwritings 

  • Engage in fast prototyping, and agile software development and deliver measurement-driven model improvements;

  • You’ll design and run and end to end complex pipelines of models and work with stakeholders to satisfy requirements

  • You will work closely with engineering teams to train, optimize, and deploy models

  • Collaborate with Data Science Engineers to deploy datasets, truth sets, models, pipelines, training and inference code to the cloud

  • Effectively communicate and present deliverables and solutions to teams, stakeholders, and executives

  • Applied Research and implementation of new AI techniques (layout/object detection, transcription, generative AI, NLP, LLM, CV solutions for NER)

Who you are...

  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Computer Science, Data Science or a quantitative field 

  • Minimum 3-4 years of hands-on technical experience developing and deploying AIML models in production settings

  • Specialization in computer vision, deep learning and machine learning 

  • Strong proficiency in Python, LLMs, CV, NLP and other libraries 

  • Familiarity with deep learning frameworks like Pytorch, Hugging Face, OpenAI, TensorFlow, SpaCy, SciPy stack, etc.

  • Experience with applied research and implementing published models for practical to real-world applications

  • Nice to have experience with Sagemaker and other AWS services 

  • Strong software development experience is required for succeeding at this role

  • Self-starter, high level of motivation and ability to work well independently as well as motivate and energize teams.
