The Opportunity
This position works out of our Columbus, OH location in the Nutrition Division. In Research & Development, our ambition is providing innovative high-quality products, creating sustainable value, delivering superior user experience, and enhancing health outcomes at all stages of life.
The Research Scientist will provide scientific expertise to drive innovations for key nutritional brands and development of scientific research projects at Abbott Nutrition towards development of new products or improving existing products.
What You’ll Work On
Primary Functions:
- Developing an innovation pipeline for key Abbott nutritional product to target muscle loss and metabolic dysfunction resulting from chronic disease (e.g. cancer, diabetes, etc.), aging (sarcopenia), hospitalization, and malnutrition. This will include:
- Proposing scientific concepts to help develop brand innovation, based on new and evolving mechanisms of action and research gaps, in the areas of mobility and metabolism across the lifespan.
- Independently conducting literature searches to identify novel ingredients and appropriate preclinical models to screen for ingredient efficacy.
- Designing and implementing preclinical studies (animal and cell culture) to evaluate nutritional ingredients to fill the innovation pipeline for the brands.
- Translating preclinical findings by designing and conducting early-stage human clinical studies.
- Developing intellectual property for Abbott by filing patent applications and understand the patent landscape.
- Endure Abbott science through scientific publications (original articles, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, reviews etc.) in peer-reviewed journals, and communicate research findings to scientific and non-scientific audiences.
- Identify best-in-class external institutional partners to collaborate with on research projects that will help building the science to support innovations and products.
- Cross-functionally collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g. nutrition science, product development, regulatory affairs and commercial) to understand and leverage their expertise towards progressing the innovation pipeline toward commercialization.
- Understand the competitive landscape and identify ways to differentiate Abbott products on market.
