Department Background

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.

The Cornell Biological Field Station is an internationally renowned center for fisheries and aquatic research located on the shore of Oneida Lake and includes a small, protected harbor for research boats and has a number of laboratory, housing, storage, and maintenance buildings. The purpose of the position is to provide support in order for CBFS to perform its intended mission of excellence in research, teaching and outreach in environmental science, fisheries, and ecology.

Position Summary

This is a full-time, temporary position at the Cornell Biological Field Station at Shackelton Point, Oneida Lake funded by the New York State DEC.  The successful candidate will assist in various fisheries surveys including trawls, gillnets, seines, trap-nets, fyke nets, and electrofishing.  Some surveys will be conducted in inclement weather and electrofishing will be conducted at night.  When not in the field, the successful candidate will help maintain sampling equipment, process samples under supervision, and complete simple data entry tasks. Some interactions with the public and agency personnel are required.

Maintain a safe working environment to ensure that all protocols and procedures adhere to safety requirements. Maintain professionalism when interacting with anglers at all times

Appointment from March 17th 2025 to November 14th 2025 with possibility for extensions.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma and up to 1 year of relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NYS driver’s license and be cleared to drive for university business.
  • Must take pride in daily work and be comfortable with multitas
