Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a highly independent, professional supervisory position serving as the lead assay developer and trainer for the Molecular Department.  Responsibilities will include developing new sequencing assays for surveillance or clinical use, maintaining low volume sequencing assays, supporting other departments’ development of sequencing assays, and cross-training staff to help support the department’s commitments.  The incumbent will maintain proper quality control/quality assurance practices, generate Standard Operating Protocols, and other documents as needed. 

 

This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets.

 

The incumbent will maintain working relationships with internal and external partners including but not limited to: BPHL employees in other departments, DOH Epidemiologists, and the CDC.

 

Performs other duties as required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of sequencing methods and data analysis.  

Knowledge and understanding of laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols.

Ability to analyze, evaluate, research, and interpret scientific guidelines, protocols, policies, publications, and regulations.

Ability to work independently, communicated effectively, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum -

  • Have an existing Florida Clinical Laboratory license or qualify for and are willing to apply for and maintain a Florida Clinical Laboratory license.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences.  (FL Statue 483.812- Public health laboratory scientists; licensure. 3(a))

 

Preferred -

  • A Master's degree or PhD from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences. 3 years of experience in a Public Health Laboratory.
