Job Summary:
The Marist University Education Department seeks candidates for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Special Education to begin in Fall 2027.
We are seeking a dynamic, experienced teacher-scholar who will play a crucial role in shaping the future of education by supporting and developing current and aspiring elementary and secondary teachers. These efforts will directly impact the quality of special education and inspire the next generation of inclusive and responsive teachers.
The program addresses teaching holistically by developing professional educators who:
- Deeply understand themselves and their learners.
- Are committed to supporting the success of all learners.
- Possess extensive pedagogical and technological content knowledge.
- Can integrate academic content through immersive, inquiry-based instruction.
Responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in teacher education, consistent with the applicant’s areas of expertise and the department’s curricular needs.
- Advise students on academic progress and NYS certification requirements.
- Maintain an active research agenda leading to presentations and publications.
- Collaborate with faculty and administration to support student recruitment and retention efforts.
- Participate in department, school, and faculty meetings and engage in key initiatives at all these levels as part of a departmental team engaged in continuous improvement efforts.
Minimum Qualifications:
We welcome candidates with expertise in the area of Special Education who are passionate about preparing pre-service teachers. The successful candidate will require:
- A doctorate in Education, Special Education, or related field by the fall of 2027
- Specialization in mild to moderate disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, ADHD, or other academic challenges)
- A student-centered approach in guiding the next generation of teachers
- Proven success for accomplishment in scholarship that is commensurate with the tenure expectations of a university committed to a "teacher-scholar" model
- 3-5 years of teaching experience in pre-K to grade 12 schools
- The ability to model culturally responsive pedagogical approaches across all courses and foster an inclusive classroom environment
Essential Functions:
Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in pre-K to grade 12 education methods and special education instruction. Supervision and assessment of student teachers may also be included. Applicants should have an active research agenda that leads to high-quality peer reviewed publications and the ability to mentor student projects. Also responsible for the advisement of students and participation as part of a departmental team engaged in continuous improvement efforts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified in Students with Disabilities
- Experience engaging with learners and communities representing varied backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives in PreK–12 educational settings
- Prior experience teaching at the college level
