Through the ‘Maine Model of Corrections’, we promote the safety of our staff and residents while reducing barriers to meaningful rehabilitative opportunities. We facilitate restorative justice practices that equip justice-involved residents and clients with the skills they need to become contributing members of society upon release, including treatment, education, and job training.

This role involves investigative and protective services, focusing on the administration and coordination of firearms training. You will supervise and oversee a statewide firearms certification and re-certification program for correctional facilities, central office, and community corrections staff. Key responsibilities include planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating staff training programs; serving as a technical training advisor; and developing and modifying curriculum. Additionally, you will manage agency armories by inspecting, cleaning, and repairing firearms, ensuring they are in safe operating condition, and maintaining inventory to support the agency's mission. You will also oversee, assign, and evaluate the work of correctional staff, and provide functional supervision over assistant instructors and other individuals during training events. This work is performed under limited supervision.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • Knowledge of applicable Departmental laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques for curriculum, training design, classroom, practical instructional presentation, and training assessment.
  • Knowledge of advanced concepts, principles, and practices related to basic and advanced training in the application and use of firearms.
  • Knowledge of security programs, operations, techniques, use of force, less lethal munitions, and civil liability related to firearms and response tactics.
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards for firearm ranges and training facilities.
  • Knowledge of firearm operations, inspection, maintenance, and requisite levels of proficiency in all duty-related techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, set, administer, and communicate program goals and objectives.
  • Ability to evaluate trainee performance and determine successful completion of course curriculum.
  • Ability to establish, coordinate, and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to identify safety hazards, evaluate threat, and take corrective action in compliance with applicable laws, rules, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to compile and analyze training data to determine program effectiveness, identify program improvements, and to make recommendations to management regarding future training needs.
  • Ability to operate a wide variety of equipment (e.g. audio-visual, simulator, skeet launchers, trauma pac, etc.).
  • Ability to supervise, direct, evaluate, organize, and plan the work of subordinate personnel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to use and maintain all firearm systems used by the Department.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce correctional rules, regulations, policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to complete work requiring regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, occasional heavy lifting, exposure to inclement weather, and irregular hours.
  • Ability to develop curriculum, and design and evaluate training programs.
  • Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency and dangerous situations.
