About the role

This position is accountable for assisting the Dredge Captain in the day-to-day operation of the dredge.  The incumbent will actually perform the duties of Dredge Captain in this person’s absence.  These duties will be performed to ensure that the project location (river, bay, channel or waterway) is dredged to the specified depth requested by the customer.  In addition, the incumbent will work with the Leverman and other dredge crew members to ensure that assigned dredge work is progressing consistent with the time schedule projected and that all operations are being performed in a safe and efficient manner.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Works with the Dredge Captain to ensure that the assigned dredge operates safely and efficiently, receives proper maintenance, has an adequate staff of trained personnel, and is meeting project completion goals and objectives.   
  • Serves in the position of Dredge Captain in this person’s absence and provides direct leadership and guidance to crew.
  • Provides direction and guidance to the Leverman and dredge crew members on day-to-day dredge activities that need to be completed to stay on work schedule.  
  • Oversees actual dredging operation, dredge positioning, engine & machinery maintenance, quality control, and safety compliance, as may be required.
  • Works with the Dredge Captain to ensure that quality control is maintained for the project and that dredge and excavation specifications are met or exceeded.
  • Manages deck operations to ensure that all lifting equipment and handling apparatus for submerged pipelines are working properly.
  • Completes and submits daily reports that inform the Dredge Superintendent and management on daily progress made by the dredge over the previous 24 hours.  
  • Aids in the creation, development, implementation and institutionalizing of programs or procedures to increase dredge operation efficiency.
  • Assures compliance to all USCG, OSHA and other agency regulations by ensuring that the dredge is prepared for possible audit or inspection.
  • Ensures that all dredge crew members participate and sign off on regularly scheduled safety training initiatives and meetings.
  • Ensures safe, efficient dredge operations by ensuring that crew members understand and adhere to all Company safety/operations policies and governmental regulatory guidelines.
  • Assists the Human Resources Manager in the recruitment of potential candidates to fill crew openings, such as Deckhand, Boatman, Mate or Leverman.   
  • Ensures prompt follow-up on problem areas identified by audits, accident/incident investigation or other inspections.
  • Addresses employee relations, staffing and crew issues and works with the HR Manager to resolve questions or problems that arise.
  • Interfaces with all dredge employees, project team members, customers, and others in a professional manner.  
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
