Job Description

We are looking for a Director of Technical Accounting with a strong technical accounting background in US GAAP, specifically in accounting for revenues, leases, and stock-based compensation. This is an individual contributor role on a team of four, reporting to the Head of Technical Accounting. This is a global position and will partner closely with global revenue, global and regional accounting teams, FP&A, product, legal, sales and other teams across the organization to assess the accounting implications for Visa’s core and emerging products, business initiatives and strategic alliances. In this role, there is routine exposure to the Corporate Controller, Assistant Controller, and Regional Controllers. This role also partners with the SEC reporting team to prepare and review sections of the Company’s quarterly and annual SEC filings (10-Q and 10-K).

Essential Functions

  • Act as Visa’s technical accounting subject matter expert, with a focus on revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606, principal vs agent and payments to customers rules.
  • Review customer proposals and contracts for revenue recognition implications and provide guidance on deal structure. Exercise judgment within defined policies and authoritative literature to determine appropriate accounting on revenue related transactions.

Ensure appropriate documentation of accounting treatment of complex and highly judgmental transactions, including analysis, relevant literature, and conclusion.
  • Evaluate the impact of certain new accounting standards, prepare assessment papers, and execute the implementation.
  • Create and maintain accounting policies and partner with stakeholders to operationalize accounting policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the preparation and review of financial statements and footnote disclosures for 10-Qs and 10-Ks as well as earnings materials.
  • Provide on-going technical accounting training to the finance organization.
  • Work with internal and external auditors to support quarter-end reviews and year-end audits by providing timely & accurate data and communication.
  • Assist in special accounting and finance projects on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Execute all responsibilities in compliance with our SOX 404 internal control framework.

This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 2-3 set days a week (determined by leadership/site), with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time based on business needs.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
• 10 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or at least 8 years of work experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD) or at least 3 years of work experience with a PhD
• Minimum 6+ years big 4 public accounting and industry experience with a large publicly traded company.
• Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP, specifically ASC 606 revenue recognition, principal vs agent and payments to customers rules.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
• Strong technical writing skills and experience in the implementation and handling of complex U.S. GAAP accounting matters with proven ability to research, clearly articulate, and document complex technical accounting issues.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, power point and Outlook) required.

Preferred Qualifications:
• 12 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or 8-10 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 6+ years of work experience with a PhD
