Position Summary:
The Director II Software Engineering will lead and manage high-performing software engineering teams, focusing on hiring, mentoring, and motivating staff to support a large group of related business and technology areas. Key responsibilities include driving budgeting and planning, building a strong engineering brand, and collaborating with product managers to estimate effort, prioritize the roadmap, and deliver high-quality applications. The role involves designing robust, modular, and scalable systems, leading teams hands-on to implement new features, and ensuring systems are secure, compliant, and up to date. The director will monitor key performance metrics, make data-driven decisions to optimize operations, and identify opportunities for system and process improvements. They will leverage CI/CD and process optimization to improve time to market, stay current with industry trends, and drive the adoption of best practices. Additionally, the director will assist in developing the technical vision, strategy, and innovation for Mercury’s application systems and communicate with executive leadership to represent the engineering organization and its vision.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Build and manage highly motivated, high-performing software engineering teams by hiring strong talent, mentoring, and motivating the staff to support a large group of related business/technology areas, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and excellence.
- Build and maintain a strong engineering brand to attract and retain top talent.
- Drive budgeting and planning for their area of responsibility.
- Collaborate with product managers to estimate effort, prioritize the roadmap, plan, and deliver prioritized roadmap items to achieve desired outcomes.
- Review and translate product requirements into robust designs to ensure high-quality applications that are modular, configurable, maximize reuse, are fast, effective, user-friendly, secure, compliant, scalable, and maintainable to deliver desired outcomes.
- Lead the team(s) hands-on to deliver new or improved features per desired outcomes, addressing any impediments in delivering a high-quality solution within their scope of responsibility.
- Collaborate with other teams and stakeholders as necessary to ensure an overall successful delivery of the intended functionality.
- Review product requirements, design, and code to ensure the best quality and adherence to best practices.
- Ensure that all application system(s) for their area of responsibility are secure, compliant, performing per expectations, and up to date on the tech stack.
- Monitor and report on key performance metrics, making data-driven decisions to optimize engineering operations.
- Identify opportunities for system and process improvements.
- Drive the implementation of new features, large refactors/migrations, as well as process changes.
- Leverage CI/CD and process optimization to improve time to market.
- Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and technologies, and drive the adoption of best practices within the team.
- Assist in developing and driving the technical vision, strategy, and innovation for Mercury’s application systems.
- Assist in communicating with executive leadership to represent the engineering organization and its vision.
Qualifications
Education:
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or other related fields Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred:
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science
Experience:
Minimum:
- 10+ years of Software engineering experience with 2+ years experience in Senior Engineering Management roles.
Preferred:
- Experience in designing, building and rolling out enterprise level application suite with a focus on configurability and an API-first approach
- Experience building cloud based software platforms
- Experience migrating legacy system functionality and data
Knowledge and Skills:
