We have been rapidly scaling our investment in our data platforms to build the most powerful and innovative data stack in all of life sciences and pharma, disrupting how medicine is created and delivered. We are looking to hire a new leader for our Data Platform Engineering team to who brings strong technical expertise, a product mindset that embodies the unique Moderna Mindsets, and passion to change the future of medicine through technology innovation paired with stakeholder partnership across the organization.
In this role, you will directly lead a large team responsible for our full data platform stack including several newer data platform services including: 1) Our scalable data lakehouse which is connecting vast amounts of structured and unstructured data from our lake, warehouse and other systems into a unified semantic layer to power more complex analytics on big data, enable deeper self-service and serve as a stepping stone to an integrated data fabric and data mesh across Moderna, 2) Our streaming platforms which will unite data in motion into a cohesive streamset to directly fuel real-time AI applications and rapid insight generation in manufacturing, commercial, medical affairs, clinical studies and more, 3) Our data exchange platform will bring discoverability, context and accessibility to our wealth of data through an intuitive persona-based experience allowing thousands of users to get automated access to this data, regardless of which platform it will be consumed in, and more quickly discover, understand and act on the hidden value in that data.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Lead and coach a team of Data Platform Engineers, Data Architects, and Software Development Engineers (SDEs) as they execute on work to develop, iterate, and scale our new state of the art data stack, while always keeping a focus on customer experience and value
Roll-up your sleeves, act as an owner, and lead by example by directly building and delivering components of your product’s backlog yourself and sitting with your team to share your expertise and help them develop their own competencies
Develop data flow pipelines to extract, transform, and load data from various data sources in various forms, including custom ETL pipelines that enable model and product development
Drive the team to further build-out and enrich our Lake, Warehouse, Lakehouse, and the microservices architecture that connects it all together
Partner closely with Product Managers (PMs), Technical Program Managers (TPMs), business partners and technical stakeholders to develop a product roadmap, architect the platforms and ensure a dense and impactful product backlog which you and your team will deliver on
Lead regular checkpoints with your team, including architecture & code reviews, daily standups and backlog reviews
Be responsible for the overall technical design strategy and details to deliver against customer needs while staying consistent with our overall data strategy
Manage the process of product delivery end to end and team deliverables whether that’s development of new integrations, enhancements or operations
Drive your team to passionately focus on deeply understanding customer needs and creatively designing, building, and delivering solutions that internal customers will be love, champion and adopt
Demonstrate strong understanding of the business and customer value of data products
Embed sustainable practices as part of development including data/platform observability, scalable code, metadata enrichment, effective documentation, proactive signal development and testing of the proper scope and rigor
Drive the team to diagnose and identify the root cause of problems as they occur
Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications):
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, business, analytics, or a related field
12+ years of experience in product-oriented data platform development, data engineering, data governance, or data analytics at scale
4+ years of management experience overseeing engineers
Deep experience across the AWS data stack including services such as Redshift, S3, Kinesis, Lambda, Glue, Lakeformation, Cloudfront, EMR, etc
