Director, Coastal Resilience

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Vice President, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Director, Coastal Resilience, will spearhead the development and implementation of innovative strategies to promote coastal resilience across priority geographies in Latin America and the Caribbean, in alignment with Audubon’s Flight Plan conservation efforts. This role involves crafting and advancing seascape conservation concepts, establishing corporation agreements with key industry and environmental stakeholders, and producing practical guides for coastal resilience and nature-based practices. They will be responsible for forging and managing strategic partnerships to scale up conservation programs, ensuring projects are executed successfully and in a timely manner while meeting donor expectations. This position requires overseeing a team, including conservation managers, contractors, and volunteers, to achieve project goals. A significant part of the role will be to collaborate with Audubon partners to generate funding opportunities, work closely with the Latin America and Caribbean Communications team to create impactful materials that showcase our initiatives, and engage a broad audience through various platforms and public speaking engagements.

Essential Functions

• Lead the design and implementation of the Coastal Resilience Strategy for Audubon Americas and support conservation work for Flight Plan.

• Develop and fundraise for seascape conservation concepts to advance coastal resilience projects in priority geographies in Latin America and the Caribbean.

• Develop corporate agreements with industry associations and environmental authorities in projects areas.

• Develop and disseminate playbooks for coastal resilience and nature-based solutions and practices.

• Manage relationships with key partners to develop scalable conservation programs in priority project areas.

• Oversee timely and successful execution of projects and develop reports to meet donor requirements.

• Supervise regular and intern staff through establishment of work objectives and priorities, reviewing and revising these objectives on an ongoing basis to guide and mentor team members in their work progress.

• Manage contractors and volunteers, as required.

• Develop concepts in collaboration with Audubon partners to fundraise for projects.

• Work with Audubon Americas Communications team to develop communications materials – blogs, social media posts, newsletters and reports – to highlight the work and engage audiences.

• Deliver presentations and speak publicly on behalf of Audubon to a wide range of audiences, tailoring presentations to fit the needs of the audience.

• Support a culture of philanthropy, including public funding efforts.

• Collaborate with colleagues across the Americas including through joint planning and execution of shared priorities.

• Maintains and fosters culture of safety.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in coastal and marine areas, environmental management, or a related field. At least 10 years of related professional experience.

• Experience in successfully leading teams, managing projects, and driving coastal resilience and conservation initiatives in seascape and coastal settings.

• Experience in conducting or facilitating coastal and marine research, as well as developing and delivering educational programs or workshops on sustainable or natural based solutions and practices.

• Deep understanding of coastal and marine conservation.

• Ability to develop and implement strategic plans that align with the organization’s goals for sustainability and coastal resilience and marine work.

• Strong problem-solving skills; excellent judgment and decision-making skills and possessing a high degree of integrity in all deliverables.

• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that can be adapted to reach a wide range of individuals and used to build consensus.  Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences. Including farmers, researchers, policy makers, and the general public.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to maintain accountability for work products.

• Demonstrated experience working with external partners and volunteers.
