Software Developer Intern

The Elevator Pitch  

Do you want to gain hands-on experience in software development? Are you eager to learn and develop critical skills for your future career? Would you like to interact live with complex hardware that performs important detection tasks? Do you like to combine the simplicity of Python with the power of C++ to create powerful tools? 

In this 10-week Software Development Intern role, you will develop a tool that helps developers and customer support to diagnose and solve issues with the system. Not only will you be gaining critical skills in software development, but you will also have the opportunity to be exposed to the ins and outs of the company, while getting exposure to all other departments and how they operate. 

Success in the Role: What are performance outcomes over the first half and second half of the internship you will work toward completing?  

  In the first 5 weeks, you will: 

• Understand Evolv, our product and culture, what we do, and why we do it 
• Understand how our system works 
• Understand the hardware and software architecture of the machine 
• Learn the C++ APIs we use to communicate with the hardware 
• Design an Explorer Tool that connects live to the hardware and displays the state of the system in an easy-to-understand way 
• Decide what information you want to display, how to gather it, and how to display it 
• Write a Technical Requirements Document (TRD) to document your design decisions 

In the last 5 weeks, you will: 

• Write the code in Python to implement the Explorer Tool 
• Make sure the tool is performant, doesn’t interfere with the working of the system but also represents the state of the system in a timely manner 
• Create a beautiful graphical UI to display the information using PyQT 
• Do customer engagement session to understand how to organize the information to achieve maximal understanding of the working state of the system in minimal time 
• Have a better idea of what you want or don’t want out of your career 

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis? 

• Work independently most of the time 
• Regularly interact with senior engineers who will help you understand the hardware and the software APIs 
• Interact with members of the team to gather requirements about what they expect the Explorer Tool to display 
• Have considerable freedom on how to design the UI and how to implement the tool 
• Show your progress in a weekly meeting. 
• Mostly write Python code. Should you need changes to an existing API or a new API you might have to write the necessary C++ code. 
• Document all work completed

• You will be joining the Software Development Team, reporting to the Senior Software Engineering Manager.

Where is the role located?  

• The location of this role is based in Waltham, MA with some flexibility in being remote some days.  We do not provide relocation assistance at this time.

What is the pay range?

• The hourly pay range for this internship position is $22-$26 an hour. Our pay ranges are determined by your current level of education.
