Attention job seekers with a background in occupational safety!  We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to join our team as an Occupational Safety Specialist with the SafetyWorks! on-site consultation and training program.  Responsibilities include interpreting the laws, rules, regulations, and policies of the Bureau of Labor Standards and enforcing safety and health standards.  Positions in this classification are differentiated from Safety Compliance Officers because the work requires consultation and advising employers in developing safety compliance programs.  Work is performed under limited supervision.Statewide travel required.  

Primary responsibilities include:  

  • Inspects machinery and equipment in order to determine compliance with safety and health standards.
  • Observes workers in order to determine proper operation of machinery and use of prescribed safety equipment such as glasses, helmets, goggles, respirators, and clothing.
  • Inspects ventilation, lighting, sanitation, and other general working conditions in order to ensure established standards are met.
  • Inspects specified areas for fire prevention equipment and other safety devices in order to ensure required equipment and devices are present.
  • Discusses inspection findings and possible remedies for safety violations with employers and officials in order to correct deficiencies noted and enhance safety in the workplace.
  • Investigates industrial accidents in order to determine cause.
  • Writes inspection reports in order to document findings and other required information.
  • Inspects building and construction projects for compliance with safety and health standards including shoring, staging, scaffoldings, haulage, electrical grounding, drainage, guarding of machinery, and the correction of hazardous conditions in order to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Confers with employers and employees in order to enlist their active interest in establishing safety and health programs.
  • Conducts conferences and training programs pertaining to safety and health for public and private employers and employees in order to increase safety awareness.

Skills or knowledge required:

  • Knowledge of proper and safe tool and equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of proper use of safety devices.
  • Knowledge of proper and safe use, handling, and storage of hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of the general principles of safety inspections.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of safety program methods and goals.
  • Knowledge of proper use of fire suppressing devices and fire hazards.
  • Knowledge of safety enforcement procedures and laws.
  • Ability to inspect a variety of industries and isolate specific unsafe acts, conditions, and violations of safety regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to interpret and apply safety laws. 

Minimum qualifications:

Six (6) years of education and/or experience in health and safety, fire safety, or directly related area.
