The Production Supervisor is responsible for leading and managing a team of structural welders and fabricators involved in the assembly of heavy-duty components and frames for custom emergency response vehicles, cabs, and chassis. This role focuses on structural welding processes, including MIG and flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), ensuring compliance with engineering specifications, welding codes, and safety standards. Reporting to the Production Manager, the supervisor oversees daily operations, staffing, training, safety, and continuous improvement initiatives within the structural welding department. The supervisor partners with Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, Purchasing, Safety, and other departments to meet production goals and deliver structurally sound welded assemblies that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Assigns daily tasks to structural welding personnel to meet production schedules and project timelines.
- Manages workflow to ensure timely and efficient completion of structural weldments in accordance with engineering drawings, work instructions, and customer specifications.
- Ensures adherence to all structural welding standards (AWS D1.1 or equivalent) and quality control measures; stops production when necessary to correct nonconformities.
- Reviews weld quality, joint fit-up, and final assemblies for conformance to blueprints and codes; enforces high standards of workmanship.
- Leads departmental safety efforts by enforcing OSHA and company safety policies and promoting safe work practices.
- Maintains accurate employee attendance records and manages timekeeping, overtime, and shift assignments.
- Provides on-the-floor technical support to welders; works with Engineering, Quality, and Materials departments to resolve issues and improve product design and manufacturability.
- Participates in hiring, onboarding, and training of structural welders and fabricators.
- Contributes to budgeting for labor, equipment, materials, and consumables specific to structural welding operations.
- Drives continuous improvement in welding processes, equipment utilization, and team performance.
- Encourages and facilitates employee suggestions for improvements to safety, quality, and efficiency.
- Ensures departmental goals related to Safety, Quality, On-Time Delivery, and Cost are communicated and achieved.
- Interfaces daily with Engineering to review structural design changes, prototype development, and introduction of new welding techniques.
- Coordinates with Purchasing on materials and consumables used in structural welding processes.
- Collaborates with Maintenance to ensure welding equipment, jigs, and fixtures are operational and well maintained.
- Participates in daily production meetings, shop floor walk-throughs, and escalates issues and improvement ideas.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in a related field preferred
- Minimum of five years’ experience in a structural welding or heavy fabrication environment with demonstrated leadership responsibilities
- Proficient in reading blueprints, weld symbols, and structural drawings
- Strong knowledge of structural welding standards (AWS D1.1 or equivalent)
- Experience with MIG, FCAW, and other structural welding proce
