Park Guide Participant

 

Position Summary 

Join us in sharing the story of the ancestral Puebloan people with visitors from all over the world. This position will serve Hovenweep National Monument by: 1) Increasing visitor service and satisfaction. 2) Providing resource presence and protection. 3) Increasing visitor appreciation of and knowledge about park resources.

 

Schedule 

August 3, 2025 - December 13, 2025

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

Your primary responsibilities will be to staff the Hovenweep visitor center to provide orientation, answer questions, and help visitors plan trips (50%); performing trail patrols, hiking and driving unimproved dirt roads in a government vehicle (35%); opportunities to provide interpretive talks/presentations and assist with youth education (10%); and assist with other projects (5%). Career development opportunities will be provided as time and interest allows.

Required Qualifications 

Successful applicants will have: -Ability to work independently on assigned projects while being an engaged, collaborative member of a team; -Ability to self-motivate and actively look for ways to remain productive; -Ability to maintain a positive attitude and consistently be courteous and polite to visitors and youth; -Skill at oral communication and tactful discussion of controversial subject matter; -A valid state-issued driver's license and be at least eighteen years of age; -Due to the remote location, a personal vehicle is required

 

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Living Accommodations 

The housing will be a shared housing unit. You will have your own bedroom (queen size bed, dresser, nightstand, light) and shared living quarters (kitchen, living room, dining room, and bathroom). There are basic kitchen supplies and a washer and dryer in the house. There is also a separate communal space for the "neighborhood" where satellite TV and a DVD player (with many movies) are provided. There is also free wifi in the employee housing area.

 

Compensation  

  • $1,100 - one-time RT travel allowance
  • $600 - weekly living allowance
  • Free Housing

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.

AmeriCorps Enrollment Notice

 

This position may be eligible for AmeriCorps enrollment. However, the SCA has not yet received confirmation of a grant award for this program. If funding is awarded, you may qualify for an AmeriCorps Education Award. If not, you will serve in a non-AmeriCorps role with the same living allowance and benefits. If selected, you will be updated on AmeriCorps funding status before your start date.
