This Opportunity
WSP is seeking a Design Services During Construction Manager to join the dynamic transportation team in UT. This person will be working out of the Salt Lake City office. While this person will be working on projects for Utah, they may also be based out of one of our Denver, CO WSP offices.
Your Impact- Correspond effectively with design technical discipline leads so as to deliver services in timely manner; escalate to regional managers and design manager any issues related to team performance.
- Correspond effectively with Contractor’s construction manager, project manager, design-build coordinator and construction supervisors to appropriately express the intent of the design.
- Effectively manage change orders, including developing notice letters, developing requests for change proposals, working with design team to develop cost proposals for the changes, and negotiate the change with contractor and/or owner.
- Working closely with legal staff, effectively defend against assertions of design errors, omissions and inconsistencies and propose adjustments in conjunction with technical discipline leads to reflect design intent.
- Be the primary point of contact between Contractor and technical discipline leads; require all communication with design team to be through Post Design Service Lead (PDSL).
- Working closely with Design Manager, develop DSDC organization and DSDC plan to ensure appropriate staffing levels on and off site to support DSDC services.
- Review in a timely manner shop drawings, working drawings and other submittals to supplement design team review; take on as much of this workload as practicable.
- Perform or require technical discipline leads to perform site inspections or investigations required to review, respond to and/or resolve RFIs, NDCs and FDCs.
- Manage and oversee NCRs, NDCs, FDCs and Shop Drawings; respond to RFIs, NCRs and NDCs, and drawing revisions to ensure integrity of design intent.
- Participate in field meetings as necessary.
- Review weekly hours/costs and monthly reports; prepare monthly status reports.
- Manage use of iCRC resources
- Participate in WSP internal design performance reviews
- Oversee As-Built Drawing production
- Maintain a daily diary
- Understand project design and construction requirements), contract drawings, plans issued for construction, Design Quality Plan, PMP, and all other pertinent documents
- Assist Design Manager in preparation of invoices
- Participate in weekly meetings arranged by Contractor or Owner as appropriate or required
- Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide “trusted advisor” service and future ready solutions for clients.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- 10+ years of relevant post education experience.
- Engineer license preferred.
- Prior experience performing DSDC
- Advanced proficiency with infrastructure design.
- Technical expertise in additional fields such as bridge design/construction, roadway design/construction, MOT, utilities or drainage is preferred.
- Works independently and provides guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Tactical lateral thinking and strong analytical skills with attention to detail and prioritization of responsibilities in a pressure work environment.
- Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including senior management, clients, regulators, and company-wide staff, including those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exits.
- Advanced proficiency with office automation, discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Strong ability to quickly adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility to a variety of schedules and hours to meet business needs.
