The Lead Electrician is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and performing electrical and instrumentation maintenance, repair, and installation activities throughout the facility. This position ensures the safe and efficient operation of production and utility systems by leading a team of electricians, enforcing safety compliance, and providing hands-on expertise with troubleshooting and preventive maintenance programs.
Daily Responsibilities:
- Lead, assign, and oversee daily electrical work for maintenance staff.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical systems, motors, VFDs, and control panels.
- Support and maintain PLC systems (Allen Bradley, Siemens, etc.) and HMIs.
- Install, inspect, and maintain electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures in compliance with NEC, OSHA, and company standards.
- Calibrate and maintain process instrumentation (temperature sensors, flow meters, pressure transmitters, pH probes, weight scales).
- Develop and oversee preventive maintenance schedules, ensuring all activities are documented in CMMS.
- Diagnose root causes of electrical malfunctions and implement corrective solutions.
- Train, mentor, and evaluate electricians in safe work practices and technical troubleshooting.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns to minimize downtime.
- Maintain compliance with USDA, HACCP, GMPs, and food safety standards when working in processing areas.
- Ensure all work is completed following lockout/tagout (LOTO), arc-flash, and PPE requirements.
- Assist with capital projects and commissioning of new equipment or upgrades.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical/vocational certification preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of industrial electrical experience, including at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory role.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, schematics, PLCs, VFDs, and motor controls.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, blueprints, and P&IDs.
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools, meters, and power hand tools.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for 8–10 hours per shift.
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. routinely and up to 80 lbs. occasionally.
- Ability to bend, kneel, climb, and work at heights or in confined spaces.
- Work in cold, hot, wet, and noisy environments.
- Must wear all required PPE.
