Job Duties

The Chickahominy Health District is seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner to join its team of professionals dedicated to the mission of improving the health of our community. The Chickahominy Health District is one of 35 districts under the Virginia Department of Health and serves approximately 174,000 people in the counties of Charles City, Goochland, Hanover, and New Kent.

The Nurse Practitioner Senior performs patient care with a significant degree of independence and autonomy. There is a physician available for consultation, either onsite or by phone/video call. This position works collaboratively with our medical team to deliver quality patient care in a variety of programs, including women’s health, family planning, maternity care, refugee health, and sexually transmitted infections. Typical clinical duties include obtaining a complete health history, performing physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests and procedures, interpreting test results, prescribing medications and other appropriate therapy, referring to specialty care as needed, and developing an appropriate plan of care for management. Other duties may include participating in emergency preparedness exercises, responding to public health emergencies and disasters (e.g., outbreaks, weather emergencies), and collaborating with our population health team on community health improvement efforts.

This position may be eligible for up to a $3,000 sign-on bonus, or up to 40 hours of frontloaded annual leave, contingent upon a one-year employment commitment with the Chickahominy Health District.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications

• Licensure as a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Practitioner in Virginia.
• Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology.
• Ability to obtain medical history, perform physical exams, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses, develop patient management plans, and provide health education to clients.
• Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision, using excellent clinical judgement, with ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with coworkers, patients and the public.

Additional Considerations

· Prior Public Health or Community Health Experience preferred.
· Significant clinical experience in prenatal care, family planning, and STI treatment preferred.
· Bilingualism with fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.
