TheMedical Assist ant, Certified performs routine administrative and patientcare supportiv e dutiesin a Health System medical practice that assistmedical and/or nu rsingstaff in the examination and treatment ofpatients and ensure the cl inic/office runs smoothly.


Work Performed

Clinical re sponsibilities:The CMA takes medical histories and records vital signs, explainstreatment procedures to patients, and prepares patients for exam inationsand procedures.Patient caresupport responsibilities may include assisting the medicaland nursing staff during examination and procedures , collecting andpreparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laborat orytestin theclinic/office, taking electrocardiograms, removing sutures/ staples,changing sterile and non-sterile dressings, promoting patient/familyunderstanding of the educational content and his/her involvement in theplan of care, and documenting in the patient record.Other clinical s upportresponsibilities includedisposing ofcontaminated supplies, instrum entprocessing, high level disinfectionand sterilization of medical instr uments, telephoning prescriptions to apharmacy, preparing and administer ingmedications as directed by aphysician, and authorizing drug refills a sdirected. Performs otherclinical functions as delegated and supervised bythe physician.Administrative responsibilities:The CMA greets patients, answers telephones, schedules appointments toinclude arrive appointments inMaestroCare, checkoutpatients, andreferral scheduling; arranges forhos pital admissions andlaboratoryservices, updates and files patient medica lrecords, fills outinsuranceforms, handles billing, bookkeeping to inclu dereceiving copays andcollections on account balances; correspondence, a nd ordering clinicaland clerical supplies and forms. Performs otheradministrative dutiesasdirected.May be requested to be a liaisonfor clinic ac tmmittees.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Good custo mivities suchas JointCommission and falls and/or participate in clinic c oer service skills.Work requires the ability to understand and follow or al and writteninstructions generally acquired through a high school educ ation andmedical assistant programming.Heavy lifting and the ability tot ransport stretcher and wheelchairpatients may be required.Working knowle dge of sterile techniques and special procedures that areapplicable towo rk performed.Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administeringroutine and special treatments to patients.Workingknowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene andbasic health andsafety precautions a pplicablefor work in a clinic setting. Workingknowledge of infectioncont rol procedures and safety precautions.Age specific competencies.Daily cl inic preparation process; registration, scheduling, chargeposting, order entry.Able to document and communicate pertinentinformationAbilityto est ablish and maintain effective working relationships withpatients and cli nicstaffTyping skillsMedical terminologyLevels II and III-- Ability toin dependently seek out resources andwork collaboratively

Education

Work requires completion of a related 1 year technical school program.


Experience

Work generallyrequires two years of experience in health care EXPERIENCE specialties related to the specific position; two years additional years related experience may be substituted for the technical school. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR
