This Opportunity

The San Antonio, TX Team is seeking an Associate Environmental Scientist!

The Environmental Scientist responsibilities encompass supporting a successful business practice in WSP’S Environmental Impact Assessment and Permitting Service Line.  Responsibilities include providing  technical assistance and guidance for multi-media permitting and compliance projects at the federal, state and local level through the development of permit matrices, permit applications and compliance plans/reports such as SPCC, NDPES/SWPPP, Waste Management, Tier II reports, etc.  Site visits could be necessary to collect data required to develop plans and permit applications.  Secondary responsibilities would include participating in site visits to support natural resource assessments, due diligence, site investigations, collection of environmental samples from various media (soil, groundwater, surface water, etc.).  

Your Impact

• Evaluate proposed or existing operations to determine applicable environmental and regulatory compliance requirements at the federal, state and local levels. 
• Support the development of comprehensive permitting and compliance plans for projects – both construction phase and operational phase - utilizing a strategic approach that is cost-effective and efficient
• Deliver permits including preparation of permit application documents, agency engagement, and compliance guidance.
• Participate in the preparation of environmental compliance plans and reports such as SPCC Plans, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), Waste Management Plans, Tier II reports, etc. 
• Support proposal development with estimates for efforts required to deliver environmental and regulatory compliance for projects
• Learn and understand project financial management fundamentals and resources and assist in overseeing or managing project budgets as required.
• Provide Health and Safety oversight/management on field projects including the development of health and safety plans. 
• Conduct field work and data management to support projects executed by a variety of Environmental Service Lines (Natural Resources, Regulatory Compliance, Cultural Resources, Storm Water, Site Investigation and Remediation).
• Performs other duties as assigned by Direct Report.

 

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related degree.  
• 1 – 3 years of relevant experience
• Familiarity with evaluating federal, state and/or local environmental regulatory programs and requirements. 
• Quickly interpret and apply understanding of various regulatory bodies
• Adept at relationship building, team building and conflict resolution
• Strong interpersonal, presentation and writing skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of software.
• Ability to quickly establish proficiency with WSP procedures and protocols for performing Environmental Assessment and Permitting project work.
• Possess valid Texas driver’s license and meet company’s automobile insurability requirements.
• Good oral communication skills to interact with clients, staff, and staff and regulatory agency personnel.
• Excellent written communication skills for preparing proposals, reports, and other technical documents.
• Good organizational skills.
• Must be able to pass a background check and motor vehicle check.
• Willing to travel up to 25% to meet project needs in the Gulf Coast region 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Master’s degree in Environmental Science or related field preferred. 
• Experience and/or working knowledge of multi-media permitting and compliance experience in federal and state programs such as RCRA, SARA Title III, CAA, SPCC, NPDES/POTW, NEPA, CWA Section 404/408, and state / county permits.
• 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER/8-hour refresher.
• Experience outside of Texas a plus.
• Business development skills.
