Specific Responsibilities:

This is a professional position responsible for the operations of a multi-operatory dental clinic with assistance of one or more dental assistants, dental hygienist, and interviewing clerk, providing emergency, surgical, preventive, and restorative dental care to eligible clients, working under the general supervision of the medical director.

Conduct dental examinations and prepare a diagnosis on each dental patient admitted to the dental clinic and protect the dignity and privacy of each patient.  Prepare and document an appropriate and legible treatment plan for each patient and provide appropriate dental care in accordance with an established treatment plan for the patient.  Provide general dental treatment including, but not limited to, the filling of teeth, extracting teeth, sealing teeth, and other dental procedures, as required to treat the patient's specific dental needs.  Delegate appropriate remedial tasks to the dental assistants.  Prescribe and delegate to the dental hygienist those dental procedures that are permitted by law for the hygienist to perform under general supervision, making written documentation in the patient's dental record of such procedures to be performed and the time frames under which the work is to be carried out.  Review with the patient and record pertinent information regarding the patient's medical and dental health history in the dental record.  Recommend and issue appropriate referrals for other specialty dental services, i.e., full dentures, partial dentures, extensive oral surgery, and endodontics, as necessary and required by the patient's health condition.  Provide dental consultation services for other health department patients as required.  Serves as a consultant for the county regarding fluoridization of water supplies, dental promotion in schools and in the county.

Manages the operation of the dental clinic, ensuring the proper flow of patients to the clinic and their care, supervising the maintenance and general housekeeping of the instruments, equipment, and clinic spaces, as well as the maintenance of an adequate supply of dental supplies and materials.

Complies with and monitors compliance to mandatory requirements of Section 215.422 F. S. and Chapter 3A-20 of the Florida Administrative Code.

Complies with Administrative Rule 44-4.080 (1)(a)(b) and Chapter 815 F.S., "Florida Computer Crimes Act".

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and techniques of dentistry.
  • Knowledge of dental treatment techniques.
  • Skill in using dental instruments and equipment.
  • Skill in filling cavities, extracting teeth, performing dental restorative work, and treating dental diseases, infections, injuries and malformations of the mouth and teeth.
  • Ability to perform dental examinations and diagnose dental problems.
  • Ability to supervise people.
  • Ability to train others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
