Schedule: 12 hour shifts (7 am – 7 pm and 7 pm – 7 am); variable days; weekends and holidays
SUMMARY:
An Emergency Department Assistant plays a vital role in patient care by providing basic, age-appropriate support under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. This position focuses on ensuring patients' comfort, safety, and well-being while maintaining their privacy and confidentiality at all times. Through compassionate care and attention to detail, the Emergency Department Assistant helps create a supportive and reassuring environment for patients and their families.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide basic age-appropriate care to patients under the direct supervision of an RN, ensuring complete care, comfort, and safety for assigned patients
Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times
Demonstrate competence in performing technical skills
Organize and prioritize workload to maintain patient flow through the Emergency process
Perform and record routine tasks such as measuring vital signs, performing EKGs, and collecting specimens for laboratory analysis
Transport specimens to the laboratory as needed
Transport patients to and from Medical Imaging for testing
Transport admitted non-monitored patients to nursing units
Keep all areas clean
Sanitize and prepare stretchers after patient discharge, transfer, or admission
Respond promptly and graciously to patient call lights, determining needs and communicating them to appropriate personnel
Enforce safety measures by utilizing side rails, positioning beds at their lowest point, and keeping call bells within reach
Provide observation and protection of restless or disturbed patients as directed by nursing staff
Assist with restraining patients under the supervision of a nurse
Report all accidents, unsafe conditions, and unusual patient occurrences to the RN
Use appropriate interpersonal skills in all interactions
Cooperate with fellow staff to accomplish tasks
Demonstrate respectful and courteous behavior toward patients, visitors, and staff
Show willingness to assist others when needed
Assist or initiate CPR as required
Assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers of patients, including care of clothing and personal belongings
Complete errands as needed
Keep patient rooms stocked and order supplies as required
Accept reassignment to other nursing units when necessary
Assist in orienting new employees to job responsibilities as requested by the Supervisor
Participate in hospital performance improvement efforts, producing and monitoring department quality indicators
