Research and Development Associate, Biosciences

Where will you work: Onsite (Durham, NC)

The Research Associate position is focused on conducting greenhouse experiments for agriculture. As a member of the Mosaic Biosciences Research and Development team, the Research Associate will assist with setting up experiments, data collection, and sample processing. Greenhouse activities will support commercial product optimization and new product development. Experience with scientific research in a greenhouse setting, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently are required.

What will you do:

Greenhouse support:

• Executing greenhouse tasks such as pot/flat filling, planting, watering, cleaning, and general maintenance.  

• Monitor environmental conditions and plant health.

• Maintain supply inventory and provide support for shipping and receiving.

• Manage IPM program.

Product development assistance:

• Support the broader Research and Development team by setting up greenhouse experiments, collecting data, and compiling results.

• Assist with sample preparation and treatment applications.

• Provide laboratory support for fermentation and formulation efforts as needed.

Reporting data and project progress:

• Documenting observations, routine data collection, consistent measurements, and sharing experimental results promptly.

• Ensuring that experiment execution and data generation follow the highest quality, integrity, and compliance standards.

What will you need:

• Associate's degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Plant Science, or Biology required

• Bachelor's degree in Entomology, Soil Science, Plant nutrition preferred

• Minimum 3 years of industry experience with 5 years preferred

• Experience working in agriculture and/or horticulture (biotechnology, field studies, nursery production).

• Strong understanding of the principles of Integrated Pest Management.

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs; ability to sit, stand, or kneel as needed; ability to work in hot humid conditions, around plants and soil.

• Willingness to perform laboratory and administrative tasks as needed.

• Willingness to work on weekends and holidays as needed.

• Strong commitment to safety.

• Strong organizational and communication skills, highly motivated, and innovative.

• Proactive, transparent, and strong attention to detail.

• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

• Experience working in controlled environments, such as a greenhouse or growth chamber preferred.

• Has, or is willing to acquire, NC Pesticide Applicators License

• Experience working with USDA/APHIS regulated materials preferred.

• Experience working with microbes or biological products preferred.

• Experience working with environmental control systems

• Microsoft PowerApps, Smartsheets

• Experience using handheld tools for taking measurements such as chlorophyll content, spectroradiometer, pH, EC preferred

• Ability to work collaboratively with people of various international and educational backgrounds.

• Ability to work across functions and lines in a matrix environment.

• Demonstrated critical thinking and decision-making skills. 

• Ability to adapt to continually changing business and work environment.
