What You Will Do:
The Registry Supervisor is responsible for managing Certified Tumor Registrars, as well as the Birth and Death Registrars. This is NOT a remote position.
Supervise the work of others and manage the performance of individuals through feedback and recommendations.
Supervise personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, progressive discipline (when applicable), performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
Directs work assignments and allocation of data collection priorities necessary for data identification and abstraction requirements in support of ongoing research and project activities.
Completes onboarding new hire assessment to identify training opportunities that will further enhance abstracting skills and assessment may complete personalized educational content while onboarding.
Participates in Cancer Management Team meetings, Cancer Service Line (CSL) Quality Council meetings, Department staff meetings, and weekly huddles.
Provides ongoing evaluation, training, and development of skilled data collection to staff to ensure the quality of data, uniformity, appropriateness of methodology, and compliance with state and accrediting bodies for birth, death, and cancer data collection requirements.
Reviews and monitors day-to-day data collection activities to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
Reports and/or resolves issues of non-compliance with RCRS data, quality, and productivity.
Participates in quality assurance and research activities and conducts in-service educational programs.
Consults with attending physicians, nursing team, and pathologists for clarification of diagnosis and treatment as needed.
Researches medical and other relevant facilities, clinics, physician offices, and pathology laboratories and identifies opportunities for gaining access to cancer data or for conducting special projects, follow-up, and studies, reviews data for accuracy and completeness, and enters information into the database. This may require working with the CSL Quality Council staff to retrieve outside records.
Coordinate quality assurance reviews. Analyze quality reports, investigate unsatisfactory procedures or problems, and recommend solutions and quality improvements.
Participates in establishing and implementing short- and long-range goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
Reviews pathology reports, cytology reports, bone marrow reports, autopsy reports, death certificates, disease indices and radiation, oncology, and physician logs to identify possible cancer cases.
Works on special studies/projects as assigned and/or works with researchers on special case reviews and to study cancer data, coding rules, and requirements.
Perform quality control audits as necessary to meet the requirements of the state and ACoS (American College of Surgeons).
Ability to generate tumor registry reports.
Identifies all appropriate cancer cases including multiple primaries in the Cancer Registry Control Panel (CRC) are diagnosed and/or treated at UAB (University of Alabama-Birmingham).
Assist and oversee the accurate abstraction for all required data items per ACoS.
Routinely generate reports used to document and track trends in cancer occurrence and care and support scientific research.
Assist in the development of policies and procedures pertinent to the birth, death, and cancer registry.
Assists in the coordination and documentation of the quarterly ACOS Cancer Committee meeting including accreditation.
Serves as the “Cancer Conference Coordinator” for the Cancer Committee.
Complete data reports for the NABCS (including required audits)
Assist in educating the Cancer Committee on the understanding of the current Commission on Cancer standards.
Assist with CoC and NAPBC accreditation requirements and reporting.
Responsible for abstracting and staging according to the STORE manual, ICD-0 coding rules, Seer Summary Staging, and AJCC staging guidelines, respectively.
Enters data into the Tumor Registry database in compliance with state regulation and ACoS guidelines.
Review clinical documentation as appropriate.
Reviews and verifies labor and delivery documentation for accuracy.
Electronic data submissions to the state and regulatory agency.
Directly interacts with patients about confidential information.
