Senior Materials Engineer
TerraPower, LLC is seeking a highly motivated Senior Materials Engineer to support the engineering efforts of the Materials Development & Qualification team. This role will work as part of a high functioning team of engineers focused on development and qualification for next generation material and components for sodium cooled fast reactors. You will be responsible for the development and qualification of core assembly components fabricated from ferritic-martensitic steels such as HT9. You will use fundamental metallurgical principles to drive the development of manufacturing processes for advanced reactor components. You will drive the qualification program for fuel assembly components by designing and executing complex test programs to provide key design data inputs for sodium fast reactor fuel design and licensing.
Responsibilities:
Lead technical development of suppliers to increase technology readiness level of key fuel assembly components including fuel cladding tubes
Apply key lessons learned in conjunction with external suppliers to develop material and component fabrication specifications for the Natrium reactor
Use fundamental materials engineering principles to develop basic models of material performance and validate using laboratory testing
Develop test requirements, plans, specifications and procedures for testing unique materials in a high temperature liquid sodium metal environment
Oversee major test programs for qualification of core assembly materials such as thermal creep, creep-fatigue, irradiation, thermal aging, and sodium exposure
Perform scientific analysis on test data and generate technical reports to document new knowledge related to reactor design and qualification
Drive development and qualification of next generation ferritic-martensitic fuel cladding materials
Interface with various project teams to ensure materials development and testing efforts meet programmatic objectives for a wide range of TerraPower initiatives including the Natrium reactor
Provide materials engineering support for the procurement of engineered components and systems
Provide material selection guidance for TerraPower’s reactor development programs
Key Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree with minimum 5 years of related experience; or a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience; or a PhD and 1 year of related experience. A degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline is required
