About this job:
The Director of Schools is an experienced principal supervisor who assumes full ownership for the outcomes of a set of schools in DPS through the supervision, evaluation, coaching and development of the school principals, while also serving as a key contributor and leader to the DPS Central Office and steward of Denver Public Schools’ strategic roadmap and Office of Schools goals.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the School Director is accountable for a network of schools serving students in a designated region or grade-level. With school principals serving as critical agents in accomplishing the district’s vision, the School Director’s most important role is developing principal’s capacity to function as instructional leaders in their schools. Further, School Directors support the Executive Director of Schools with ensuring their schools have the resources, development, support and accountability needed to accelerate learning for students.

- Leads a set of schools to a shared belief in and ownership of the academic and whole child success of every child; works to close achievement gaps and monitors learning for ECE through graduation so that students are prepared for college and career and that they meet or exceed state standards.
- Promotes improvement through sharing best practices, collaborating on policies and practices that address district strategies and the needs and contributions of the network; creates a climate for change, continuous improvement, problem-solving, collaboration, and transparency.
- Hires, coaches, develops and evaluates dynamic school leaders to improve leadership practices to achieve better results; supports school leaders in developing distributive leadership and pipelines for teacher leadership.
- Ensures school leaders implement the district’s assessment strategy and develops the ability of school leaders and their instructional leadership teams (ILTs) to build, implement and monitor a strategic school improvement plan, establish structures for data-driven instruction, and identify and monitor supports for students.
- Establishes productive relationships with communities and community partners that contribute to the overall success of schools; supports the learning of all students, fosters inclusion, honors diverse viewpoints and accomplishes district priorities.
- Develops principals, assistant principals and Instructional Leadership Teams (or equivalent) ability to develop, implement and monitor strategic plans that help meet student achievement goals, including engagement in root cause analyses, development of theories of action, building coherent multi-year strategies and change management process needed to implement transformation initiatives at the school-level..
- Anchored in the LEAD framework, assesses the leadership capacity of each principal and develops an individualized leadership development plan for each principal; conduct regular performance conversations to support the goals in the leadership development plan.
