POSITION TITLE:                Park Maintenance Technician (part time)

DEPARTMENT:                    Parks and Natural Resources

REPORTS TO:                       Park Maintenance Foreman

FLSA STATUS:                      Non- Exempt, Part Time, Starting at $16 per hour

 

Purpose of Position:
The purpose of this position is to support full time Maintenance staff in the performance of labor functions at all Carmel Clay park locations to complete grounds maintenance, facility maintenance, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair and installation tasks. This position is a part time year round position and reports to the Park Maintenance Foreman for regular assignments, task prioritization, and other personnel issues. 

Essential Job Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assist with general maintenance tasks on Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation grounds, restrooms, trails, shelters, playgrounds, parking lots, prairies, and woodland areas.
  • Work tasks may include:
    • Cutting limbs, removing fallen trees, pruning, mulching, blowing and raking leaves and debris
    • Monitoring and removing discarded trash, litter, and waste throughout the parks
    • Cleaning of restroom building, picnic shelters, and other facilities
    • Maintaining parking areas and driveways
    • Perform basic repairs on plumbing in restroom facilities, and irrigation systems
    • Inspecting playgrounds, repairing playground equipment
    • Repairing shelters, painting, changing light bulbs and installing signs
    • Snow removal including plowing, salt application and shoveling
  • Utilize precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees, volunteers, and the public.
  • Report accurate and timely data associated with completion of work orders.
  • Inspect park properties and report deficiencies
  • Enforce park rules, regulations and policies.
  • Comply with applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Ability to operate tablet and smart phone applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively; includes ability to interact with members of the public 
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle to conduct work activities
  • Ability to operate or be trained to operate a variety of machinery, equipment and tools associated with park maintenance operations, including a UTV, tractor, blower, mower, hedge trimmer, chain saw, extension ladder, hand tools, power tools, and snow plow
  • Ability to exert heavy physical effort necessary to perform certain park maintenance tasks, involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials weighing up to 90 pounds
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, pollen, odors, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, dead animals, disease or pathogenic substances

Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1+ years related experience involving grounds maintenance and manual labor, building maintenance, construction trades, and/or auto mechanics
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position
  • Driving is an essential function of this position and individual must possess and maintain a valid Indiana driver’s license and be insurable

Additional Qualifications Preferred but Not Required:

  • Indiana Pesticide applicator certification in any herbicide category
  • Irrigation repair and installation experience
  • Certified Arborist
