Who We Are

The City Attorney’s Office serves as the chief legal counsel to the Mayor, City Council, City Auditor, City Clerk and Recorder, and all City agencies. Its responsibilities include handling city lawsuits, prosecuting ordinance violations, providing victim support in criminal cases, representing the city in investigations and litigation, advising on contractual and transactional matters, offering regulatory and compliance assistance, addressing employment matters for the city's more than 11,000 workers, and providing guidance on local, state, and federal law.

With a team of over 250 individuals, the City Attorney’s Office is dedicated to protecting resident welfare, enhancing neighborhood quality of life, and responsibly managing taxpayer funds. As advocates for effective governance, transparency, and accountability, the office empowers the city to do its work and prioritizes ethical conduct in all city operations. Whether working with city agencies, engaging community stakeholders, or collaborating with external legal counsel, the office leverages its collective expertise to navigate complex legal challenges and advance key city priorities.

What We Offer

All City and County of Denver emerging talent positions are supported by a trained hiring manager and encouraged to attend up to 4 sessions of professional development each season (Winter/Spring, Summer and Fall). You will be onboarded with a cohort of peers to help you develop your network across the City and go through similar programming throughout your time at the City.

Location & Schedule

This internship is based at the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building, located at 201 W. Colfax Ave. in downtown Denver and the Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse, where many court proceedings take place, just a few blocks away. The internship offers flexibility in both scheduling and workdays, though we do ask for a minimum commitment of eight weeks.

What You’ll Do

The Prosecution and Code Enforcement (PACE) Section of Denver’s City Attorney’s Office oversees a wide range of programs and prosecutes both municipal and state cases that significantly impact the quality of life in the City and County of Denver. The PACE team—which includes attorneys, paralegals and victim advocates —works closely with the public, City Council members, law enforcement, the courts, various city agencies, neighborhood groups, and community-based organizations to promote public safety and address quality-of-life concerns.

As a Prosecutor’s Office, PACE staffs four criminal courtrooms, two arraignment courtrooms, a juvenile docket, and a traffic courtroom. Beyond traditional prosecution, PACE encompasses specialized practice groups, including the Mental Health Unit, Public Nuisance Abatement Unit, Excise and Licenses Team, Marijuana Policy Team, a robust Victim Resources Program, a Wage Theft Team, and the Neighborhood Partnership Team. PACE also provides legal representation to the Department of Excise and Licenses, one of its primary clients.

In criminal matters, PACE prosecutes municipal violations and certain state misdemeanors, including domestic violence, assault, threats, restraining order violations, theft, and traffic-related offenses. These cases are supported by a dedicated team of 8 courtroom paralegals.

The team is currently seeking paralegal student interns who are eager to gain hands-on experience in criminal case preparation. Please note that paralegal duties for this internship do not include legal research or writing at this time.

Specifically, as a Paralegal Intern you will:

• Reviewing police reports

• Identifying witnesses

• Interviewing witnesses

• Securing video evidence

• Securing 911 audio and call cards

• Securing certified documents

• Redacting written documents

• Reviewing audio and video evidence (including body-worn camera footage)

• Redacting digital evidence

• Pulling criminal histories

• Generating motions

• Managing subpoena service returns

• Filing and mailing motions

• Operating in multiple databases

• Managing probation revocation reports

Interns will also have the opportunity to attend courtroom arraignments, hearings, and trials and will receive in-office training on Denver’s municipal criminal justice process, domestic violence, and more.
