About the role

Job Description

In order to be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Traffic Control Inspector, or must have taken, passed, and be reachable on the Open Competitive Traffic Control Inspector civil service list, Exam # 3062, or be eligible under the 55a program.

Traffic Operations’ Automated Enforcement Unit seeks to hire two (2) Traffic Control Inspectors (TCIs) who are responsible for operating the mobile speed camera vehicles deployed to school zones throughout the five boroughs of New York City. These vehicles issue Notices of Liability to vehicles exceeding the speed limits posted around various school zones under the Mayor’s Vision Zero Program. In addition to the physical manning and monitoring of the vehicle during the day, the TCI remains with the vehicle all day to ensure that the radar, camera, and flash functions are operating properly while ensuring that they are parked in a safe manner. TCIs inspectors assigned to Speed Camera Enforcement are responsible for ensuring that vehicles do not speed in school zones to provide safety to children, parents, and motorists in the community it serves. TCIs will also investigate complaints relating to the lack of traffic control devices and conditions that are hazardous in school areas and to the public. TCIs may be asked to prepare reports on potential problems associated with speed violations as requested by the public, public officials, and other city agencies. TCIs must perform vehicle, and equipment checks before deployment to ensure that the mobile speed cameras are fully operational and configured properly to ensure positive results. TCIs may scout out locations around the vicinity of the school while choosing the best route for the deployment of mobile cameras. This may also include the physical measurement of the roadway to ensure the width is within rules and guidelines for proper deployment. In addition, when needed, TCIs will be asked to verify violations for the red-light camera program, where they review the images and the information to confirm that the violation meets the requirements for a valid violation and the information is correct and accurate.

Some assignments may require a driver's license. Preference will be given to candidate who possess a driver's license valid in the state of New York. This license must be maintained throughout the duration of appointment in this position.

This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37.
