About the role

Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385-bed acute-care hospital classified as a stroke receiving center and Level I Trauma Center with an innovative, patient centered and evidence-based Rehabilitation Services Department.  Our compassionate team provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care rehabilitation, joint replacement & spinal surgery, neurosurgery, ICU, Telemetry, step-down care, skilled nursing, as well as outpatient therapy, hand and lymphedema clinics. 

GENERAL DUTIES:

The Patient Service Representative receives phone calls from physicians/physician staff and schedules procedures for the Gastroenterology Lab (GI Lab); notifies staff in the GI Lab of the procedural schedule; provides surgical services with procedural schedules on a daily basis; and schedules cases with anesthesia where requested  The Patient Service Representative greets patients and visitors in person or on the telephone; obtains demographic, financial and medical information for registration and identification, coordinates and assists in the completion of all activities relating to patients' finances, to facilitate the collection and distribution of information and to expedite a smooth and timely billing and collection process while adhering to department policies and procedures  Access to demographic information and limited patient health information related to job function

The Patient Service Representative monitors and expedites the necessary authorizations and approvals for hospital outpatient services or elective surgeries per the designated insurance carriers

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES: 

  • Receives phone calls from GI physicians/office staff for the purpose of scheduling procedures
  • Schedules GI procedures in SurgiNet, includes those cases which require anesthesia
  • Produces & distributes a daily GI procedure schedule
  • Notifies GI staff of scheduled procedures
  • Accurately assembles and organizes preoperative charts
  • Verifies test/patient identification
  • Correctly records and processes test results
  • Performs EKGs in a timely manner
  • Takes responsibility for completion of daily routine duties assigned to work area
  • Investigates and resolves pending and incomplete work
  • Communicates necessary information to appropriate team member
  • Maintains organized records and a clean, neat workstation
  • Appropriate use of equipment
  • Correctly files/distributes/charts patient reports which may include CXR, EKG,H&Ps and lab results Ability to perform duties efficiently and with minimal assistance
  • Able to look up and obtain patient registration information
  • Finishes assignments with minimal supervision and assistance from fellow employees
  • Employee is able to organize and complete several tasks simultaneously without loss of accuracy        
  • Productivity remains constant under pressures associated with the job
  • Troubleshoots problems and knows when to contact the appropriate person
  • Uses available time productively contributing to department needs
  • Suggests and supports implementation of improvements
  • Practices appropriate safety and infection control procedures
  • Maintains clean and safe work areas
  • Reports safety hazards to appropriate personnel immediately
  • Attends all mandatory safety sessions
  • Accepts work assignment readily
  • Observes work hours and attends work as scheduled Punches in and out appropriately
  • Respects the patient’s right to privacy by only discussing clinically relevant  information in appropriate surrounding
  • Responds to difficult situations with self-control and positive attitude            
  • Communicates with co-workers with clarity and respect
  • Shares responsibilities and willingly offers assistance to co-workers

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One to three years recent experience in acute care hospital scheduling, registration or business office environment 
  • Knowledge in Medicare, Medi-Cal and third party billing and collection procedures 
  • Type 35 WPM 
  • Experience or knowledge in admissions, registrations and insurance verification is essential

Preferred:

  • Ability to speak Spanish
