R&D Intern - Physical Testing

Overview:
Carlisle Construction Materials (CCM) is seeking a driven and detail-oriented R&D Intern to support research, development, and product innovation initiatives. This internship provides hands-on experience in a laboratory and manufacturing environment, offering exposure to materials testing, product development, and real-world applications of science and engineering principles.
Under the guidance of experienced technicians, scientists, and engineers, the intern will assist with laboratory testing, sample preparation, and data collection. This role is designed for students looking to build foundational technical skills while contributing to meaningful R&D projects in a collaborative, team-oriented setting.
This position typically follows a Monday–Friday schedule, with flexibility based on business needs. Minimal travel (<10%) may be required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with sample preparation and execution of laboratory testing (destructive and non-destructive)
- Support product development and innovation testing initiatives
- Conduct physical and basic chemical testing, including thermal, tensile, and compression tests
- Accurately record and organize test data, observations, and results
- Assist in analyzing data and summarizing findings for team review
- Operate laboratory equipment under supervision and follow established test methods
- Support routine maintenance, calibration checks, and organization of lab equipment
- Collaborate with technicians, scientists, and engineers on ongoing projects
- Participate in safety meetings and adhere to all laboratory safety protocols
- Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient lab environment (5S practices)
- Support documentation updates, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Contribute to team projects and complete additional tasks as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Basic understanding of scientific principles (chemistry, physics, or materials science)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures accurately
- Foundational math and analytical skills, including basic data interpretation
- Effective communication skills (written and verbal)
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Willingness to learn new equipment, processes, and technologies
- Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word)
Education and Experience:
- Currently enrolled in an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field
- Coursework or academic exposure to laboratory environments or scientific methods
Preferred:
- Prior internship, co-op, or academic lab experience
- Exposure to data analysis, statistical methods, or laboratory equipment
- Interest in manufacturing, materials testing, or product development
