About the role

The Associate Director of Student Behavior serves as a member of the Residential Education (RE) team to supervise the Care Specialist team and provide immediate non-clinical response for crisis or other critical incidents involving residential students during night and weekend hours. Reporting to the Director of Residential Education, the Associate Director of Student Behavior trains and supervises a team of Community Care Specialist to respond in-person to residential student incidents and coordinate support and follow-up plans with other RE professional staff, Resident Assistants (RAs), Student Health Services, The New School’s Department of Campus Safety, and NYC services including NYPD and EMS. This role provides direct consultation for non-critical incidents, ongoing training, attend meetings, and may participate in student-facing programs related to these focal areas. Additionally, this position works collaboratively with students, faculty, and administration to enhance the student experience for a population of 10,000 students who will serve as a member of the CareTeam and manage intervention efforts for Residential Life.  

This is a full-time, 12-month, live-on position and serves on-call, and supports evening and weekend activities. It holds non-traditional/flex hours to meet the needs of the department such as staff meetings and  staff training and development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision:

  • Supervise and provide leadership for Community Care Specialists, communicate expectations and monitor work processes.

  • Provide ongoing direction & feedback about performance through weekly 1:1 meetings and ongoing performance evaluations.

  • Provide intentional professional development opportunities that contribute to increasing competency of job responsibilities.

Student Behavior and Interventions:

  • Provide programmatic and non-clinical case management support for RE department and collaborating university support services. 

  • Monitor and evaluate incident trends and regularly report on program effectiveness.

  • Maintain shift schedules for the Crisis Response Team to ensure comprehensive coverage for all on-campus residential students across all residence halls, 7 days per week. 

  • Serve as the RE liaison to the New School Department of Campus Safety, and coordinates with Student Health Services and NYC Emergency Services including NYPD, NYFD, and EMS to assess and respond to incidents as they arise. 

  • Evaluate and revise department crisis response protocols to empower Community Care Specialist team and other Residential Education staff to implement protocols in an effective manner.

  • In partnership with Assistant Director of Recruitment and Development, develop and deliver training around policies and incident response for professional staff colleagues and paraprofessional team members. 

  • Manages student conduct process for the department of Residential Education in collaboration with Student Conduct and Community Standards. 

  • Manage all incidents through the data management system (PAVE) to ensure compliance with institutional and federal policies.

On-call responsibilities:

  • Participate in 24-hour on-call rotation with live-in professional staff colleagues; residence hall are open 365 days a year and therefore being on-call during holidays should be expected; respond to student and/or facilities issues or crises as a third-tier responder and in person as needed 24-hours a day; high level of in-person response to mental health concerns, other student support situations should be expected.

  • Consistent communication with senior leadership during crises or emergencies; maintain accurate incident reports using PAVE Software.

  • Work with Residence Life and Student Support & Advocacy team to respond to critical incidents on campus; work with other departments to provide an appropriate response to crises.

  • Maintain contact with parents and other constituencies as appropriate.

Residential Experience:

  • Serves on departmental and university committees and leads initiatives as needed.

  • Assists in departmental operations, including opening, closing, room changes, safety inspections, damage billing, etc.
