Life Insurance Processor

About the role

Responsibilities

  • Process all life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment benefits for National Benefit Fund and Greater NY members; obtain necessary documents and information associated with deceased members
  • Obtain and interpret information from the Pension and Records Retention departments necessary to process life insurance claims
  • Maintain life insurance records and claims; produce letters, maintain statistical reports and update life insurance tracking system
  • Communicate in person, via telephone and in writing with beneficiaries, employers, attorneys and other professionals regarding life insurance claims
  • Manage burial plot assignments using plot grids and maps
  • Assist Hotline Support as needed
  • Maintain the daily production quota for processing claims within the appropriate error ratios
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned by management

 

 Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required, some College or Degree preferred
  • Minimum two (2) years health claims processing experience in a health insurance or benefits environment required; or two (2) years work experience assisting with life insurance claims (i.e. research and claim status, life insurance documents, communicating with beneficiaries, funeral homes, etc.) required
  • Excellent keyboarding skills required (minimum 6,000 KPH and 6% or less error rate)
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Knowledge of 1199SEIU Benefit and Pension Fund eligibility guidelines, benefit entitlements, and plan rules for multiple Funds (Greater New York Benefit Fund, Home Care Employees Pension Fund)
  • Knowledge of health claims payment systems and web-based applications (Syntonics)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of pension and disability benefits, laws concerning guardianship, estates and transfers to minors act
  • Familiar with health claims processing and terminology (ICD-9 codes); able to identify cause of death
  • Excellent communications skills – oral, written and listening
  • Must have high ethical standards and excellent interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Must meet performance standards including attendance and punctuality
