The Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Resident is a fully licensed Physical Therapist who participates in a structured program of advanced clinical training while providing patient care under the mentorship of experienced faculty. The University of Chicago Medicine Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency is accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) and is designed to advance the resident’s clinical reasoning, patient management, and professional development in outpatient orthopaedic physical therapy practice.
Residents provide physical therapy services while completing a comprehensive educational curriculum that includes structured mentoring, didactic education, research and quality improvement activities, and professional development opportunities. Residents will work closely with faculty that include ABPTS board-certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialists (OCS) and other experienced clinicians within the UChicago Medicine Therapy Services department.

Required Qualifications:
- Graduation from an approved physical therapy school. Entry level degree as required by licensing standard (post baccalaureate, masters, or Doctorate in Physical Therapy).
- CPR Certification.
- Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care which is age specific/appropriate for the types of patients served.
- Basic computer knowledge /skills needed for patient care, advancing education, and research applications.
- Appropriate interpersonal skills to enable positive interactions with patients/families, the multidisciplinary, faculty, and external contacts.
- Declared ambition to become an American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties clinical specialist in an associated area of PT practice.
- The willingness and acknowledgement that participation in the residency will take self-directed initiatives and study outside of defined work schedule to accomplish all required tasks.
- Strongly encouraged to have minimum 16 weeks of clinical exposure to patients in declared area of specialty (including clinical rotation or volunteer experience).
License/Certifications:
- Current physical therapy license in the State of Illinois, CPR Certification
