About the role

Job Description:

The Chief Risk Officer (CRO) is responsible for overseeing and managing the enterprise-wide risk management program at Intermountain Health, with a primary focus on Intermountain’s external insurance providers. The leader ensures that the company identifies, assesses, mitigates, and monitors the risks that may affect Intermountain’s strategic objectives, financial performance, reputation, compliance, and patient safety. The leader works closely with senior leadership, and external stakeholders.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement the enterprise-wide risk management strategy, policy, and governance structure in alignment with Intermountain’s vision, mission, and values.
  • Lead and manage the Intermountain Health Risk Management functions and staff, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission, vision, values, and strategic goals.
  • Oversee and administer all lines of insurance coverage, including marketing of insurance program, completion of applications and underwriting submissions, collection and maintenance of data, establishing reserves, claim notices and administration. 
  • Benchmark the insurance program as needed.  Present renewal options to Intermountain leadership and the Captive Board and make recommendations for binding coverage.
  • Negotiate insurance placement pricing, structure, limits and retention for all property & casualty insurance lines of coverage.  Conduct cost/benefit analysis of insurance program alternatives to appropriately balance the total cost of risk with the Organization’s ability to maintain operations.
  • Oversee the operations of Intermountain’s captive insurance program and build collaborative relationships with captive regulatory authorities, actuaries, brokers, insurers and reinsurers to leverage the captive in the development of innovative risk transfer solutions.
  • Establish and maintain a risk appetite and tolerance statement that reflects the company's risk profile and risk capacity.
  • Identify, assess, mitigate, and monitor the key risks that may affect Intermountain’s strategic objectives, financial performance, reputation, compliance, and patient safety.
  • Monitor market trends and developments that affect coverage and pricing.  Provide metrics and analyze information necessary to benchmark the total cost of the Organization’s property & casualty insurance, risk management and claims management programs.
  • Provide regular and timely risk reports and dashboards to senior leadership, and relevant committees.
  • Advise and support the business units and functions in integrating risk management into their decision-making processes and operations.
  • Foster a risk-aware culture and promote risk education and awareness across the organization.
  • Manage the risk management budget and resources.
  • Keep abreast of the emerging risks and trends in the healthcare industry and the regulatory environment.
  • Assist in conducting acquisition risk/insurance due diligence and ensure consolidation into the corporate insurance programs.
  • Review system-wide contracts for impacts related to indemnity, limitation of liability and insurance requirements.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate or Master’s Degree is required. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in insurance, reinsurance, claims and risk assessment principles within healthcare systems including broad knowledge of complex insurance structures and alternative products. Expert knowledge of risk management frameworks, methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Highly strategic thinker with the ability to present complex insurance information and approaches in light of financial and operational needs of the Organization; ability to take a long range view of risk and insurance decisions and see their broad impact on the Organization. 
  • Experience in a leadership role in insurance, risk finance or corporate risk management across a diversity of traditional and non-traditional risks.
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring and leading a team of risk management professionals.
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information with discretion and integrity.
  • Ability to influence and engage with various levels of the organization and external stakeholders.
